Gary Freeman (illustrator)

Gary Freeman is an American commercial artist who works in the publishing, advertising and video game industries. He has received numerous awards for his work in illustration and advertising, and was a lead concept designer for several notable video game franchises. He currently lives with his wife in upstate New Hampshire.

Illustration

Gary Freeman's illustrated work is primarily in the categories of science fiction and fantasy.

Over 100 of his images have been published in notable science fiction magazines, including: Amazing Stories, Analog, Fantastic Stories, Heavy Metal, and Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine.[1] Of his published works, 36 have been used for magazine covers.[1]

Freeman has illustrated 21 science fiction novel covers[2] for publishers including Ace, Baen, and ROC.

Freeman illustrated the 1991 collection of Asimov stories entitled Robots.[2]

Video games

Freeman was a concept designer for Westwood and Electronic Arts. He created concepts and in-game artwork for games like the Blade Runner, Command & Conquer, Dune, Empire Earth, and Transformers franchises.[3][4]

Awards

Freeman's work has received numerous awards, including three ADDYs, Bronze & "Judge's Choice" awards from the 2004 AIGA of Las Vegas, and three Readers' Choice Awards.

Freeman has received 18 nominations from Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine for Best Cover Artist and Best Interior Artist.[5] He was also nominated for the 1989 Best Magazine Cover Illustration Chesley Award.[6]

His illustrations were selected for inclusion in the 35th annual exhibit of the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, SPECTRUM 7, SPECTRUM 11, SPECTRUM 12, Expose 3, and Infected by Art Volumes 1-6,[7] where he received the Silver award for Volume 1's Sci-Fi category.
