Garrett Van Wagoner is an American technology entrepreneur and investor.[1][2][3] He is a founder and general partner at Van Wagoner Ventures.[4][5][6] Van Wagoner is a five-time winner of the Annual Lipper Performance Achievement Award.[7]

Early life and education

Garrett Van Wagoner graduated from Bucknell University with a BSBA in 1977.

Business career

Van Wagoner started his career by working as an equity research and portfolio manager for regional banks from 1977 to 1982. He joined Bessemer Trust Company in 1982 and managed Bessemer’s small cap growth product, reached $450 million in assets over the period 1986 to 1993. Van Wagoner moved to San Francisco in 1993 to manage the Govett Small Companies Fund, a US mutual fund company.[8][9]

In 1995, Van Wagoner started his own investment adviser company, Van Wagoner Capital Management to advise the Van Wagoner Funds which identified and invested in new technology verticals.[10][11] Garrett entered the venture capital business in 1997 investing in pre IPO companies and through a Mutual Fund Company through 2003.[12] After the bubble burst with the first generation of internet stocks, Van Wagoner Fund’s performance suffered during the years 2001 until 2008.[13][14] In 2008, Wagoner rebranded the company as Embarcadero Funds and merged several funds and changed strategies to low volatility subadvisors.[15][16] The funds were acquired by a New York-based investor group in 2010.

Van Wagoner founded Silicon Valley Ventures (SVV) in 2012 and self-funded several investments in Impact/SRI to determine if a non-concessionary ROI approach to impact investing could be realized.[17] Garrett announced the first Impact fund to leverage the potential in the mobility connected transportation sector in 2016 after making several mobility connected transactions. Van Wagoner founded Van Wagoner Ventures[18] and merged with SVV in 2016 to capitalize on the work started by SVV in the mobility connected transportation space.[19][20]
