Gaman Palem

Gaman Palem an Indian comic book illustrator. He has illustrated more than 100 Indian children's comics, working mainly on mythological subjects.[1]

Gaman Palem is pursuing a doctorate degree in Mass Communication from the Madurai Kamaraj University, Tamil Nadu. He is an entrepreneur, media scholar and an artist who uses the graphic novel format as a medium to express his ideas. With his understanding of Indian mythology as well as its regional versions and interpretations, Gaman Palem has created a series of works that blend the mythical characters to contemporary contexts. A specialist in contemporary communication methods and visual communication he has a solid background in the areas of mass communication, advertising, graphic design, animation pre-production and publishing. His principal area of interest, as well as his recent industrial endeavor, has been in the field of human factor based user interface designing with augmented reality supplementing traditional print material for early learning under the banner BRAINTM Publishing. Here he aims to create modules having consistent user interface that is easy to use, aids in learning and is the one that users enjoy. Gaman's artistic style is influenced by Indian iconography, combining the traditional illustration techniques of watercolour, pen and ink with modern digital techniques.

Gaman's first series of eight picture books, The Golden Mythology Series, won the National Award for Excellence in Printing Children's Books.. 2018 “Academy Birla's 51st Annual Show” Artist participant, 9 January 2018, Kolkata. Introduced Augmented reality based sculptures on theme “Viswaroopam” as displays supplementing paintings. 2015 “Pune Biennale” Artist participant, 6 February 2015, Pune. “Go tell it on the mountain’’, A series of artworks executed in a graphic format depicting an ever changing Indian political scenario. 2013 “Freedom to March” Artist participant, 6 March 2013, Ojas Art Gallery, Delhi. A series of artworks painted on khadi cloth based on Gandhi’s famous Dandi March. 2012 “United Art Fair” Artist participant, 27 September 2012, Delhi. A series of artworks based on mythology amalgamated with modern day scenarios. Gaman Palem worked at Loyola College of Education in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, was a visiting faculty at Raffles College. Having been a creative consultant in many publishing houses and animation studios he heads the initiative BYUART where he showcases affordable art. He lives and works in Chennai. His works have been published in major graphic magazines, journals and he has exhibited widely in India.
