Gabriel Rockhill is a French-American philosopher, cultural critic and public intellectual. He is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Villanova University, Founder and Director of the Critical Theory Workshop/Atelier de Théorie Critique in Paris, founding member of the autonomous collective RED: Radical Education Department, and former Directeur de programme at the Collège International de Philosophie. His work spans the fields of history, aesthetics, technology and politics, and he is a regular contributor to public intellectual debate.
Early life
Gabriel Rockhill graduated from Grinnell College in 1995.[1] He earned a master's degree under the direction of Jacques Derrida and Luce Irigaray from the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences, and a Ph.D. under the direction of Alain Badiou from Paris 8 University, as well as a Ph.d. from Emory University.[1]
Career
Rockhill is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Villanova University,[2] Founder and Director of the Critical Theory Workshop/Atelier de Théorie Critique[3] in Paris, and former Directeur de programme at the Collège International de Philosophie.[4] He also co-directs the seminar "Socio-philosophie du temps présent. Enjeux épistémologiques, méthodologiques et critiques" at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris.
Rockhill has advanced new models for thinking the historical relationship between art and politics, as well as a novel framework for rethinking history and the contemporary conjuncture. His books include Contre-histoire du temps présent: interrogations intempestives sur la mondialisation, la technologie, la démocratie (CNRS Éditions, 2017), published in English as Counter-History of the Present: Untimely Interrogations into Globalization, Technology, Democracy (Duke University Press, 2017); Interventions in Contemporary Thought: History, Politics, Aesthetics (Edinburgh University Press, 2016); Radical History & the Politics of Art (Columbia University Press, 2014); and Logique de l'histoire: pour une analytique des pratiques philosophiques (Éditions Hermann, 2010). He has also co-edited and contributed to three collections: Politics of Culture and the Spirit of Critique: Dialogues (Columbia University Press, 2011); Jacques Rancière: History, Politics, Aesthetics (Duke University Press, 2009); and Technologies de contrôle dans la mondialisation: enjeux politiques, éthiques et esthétiques (Éditions Kimé, 2009). In addition to numerous scholarly articles and opinion pieces,[5] he also edited and translated Jacques Rancière’s The Politics of Aesthetics (Continuum Books, 2004) and Cornelius Castoriadis’s Postscript on Insignificance (Continuum Books, 2011).
