Gabriel J. Campana (born July 6, 1963) is an American politician serving as the 39th and current mayor of Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He assumed office in January of 2008 and won re-elections in 2011 and 2015.

Political career

Campana has been the mayor of Williamsport, Pennsylvania since 2008. He is the only Williamsport Mayor in modern times to win 3 terms. During his tenure, crime has been cut and economic development has increased.[1][2] Campana won re-election in 2011 by a 74% to 26% margin. He was a school teacher and 12 year member of the city council before being elected mayor. Williamsport has the only Kohls Department store in America that is located within its central business district which was part of 100 million public/private partnership downtown development. Through strategic planning and working with stakeholders, over $500,000,000 worth of development has occurred in the city during his tenure. Since he has been mayor, the city has received an A+ bond rating from Standards and Poors. During his tenure, he has kept taxes low. Presently, a 50 million dollar project is in the works for the East Third Street Gateway and Park Avenue Plan. Groundbreaking occurred in July 2018 for the East Third Gateway with its key partner, Lycoming College. In 2017, Campana worked to facilitate the MLB's Little League Classic. It was a game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals, played BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field in Williamsport. In 2018, the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies will be the participants during the Little League Classic in Williamsport.

Education

Campana received post doctorate credits at Temple University and received a Doctorate Degree in Administration at the University of Sarasota, Florida. In addition, he received a Master's Degree from Wilkes University and a Bachelor's Degree from Bloomsburg University graduating Magna Cum Laude from all institutions.

Personal life

Mayor Gabriel Campana is one of 11 siblings born and raised in Williamsport. His father, Dr. Louis F. Campana, was a local physician and his mother Rose Campana, was a nurse. Campana has 5 children.

Prior to his present post, Dr. Campana was a \ teacher for 20 years and taught master's degree classes at the College of New Jersey.

After an alleged July 8, 2016 incident,without corroboration, Sonia C. Campana filed a temporary protection from abuse order against Gabriel Campana weeks later on August 1, 2016. Campana's wife claims he was abusive.[3] This court order was dismissed while a similar provision between both parties is found within a custody agreement.[4] Court documents from a nationally known psychiatrist show testimony contrary to Sonia Campana's claims. He dismissed her accusations as he knows both parties. The Campanas divorced in 2018 and both parents share 50 percent custody of their children.
