Full Motion Racing Simulator

A Full Motion Racing Simulator is a motion simulator that is purposed for racing. In this context, the term "racing simulator" does not refer to the simulation software or game, but rather the physical device that the driver sits in which is often referred to as a "chassis" or "rig".

To qualify as a racing simulator, a chassis must have:

  • mounting mechanisms for a force feedback steering wheel
  • mounting mechanisms for pedals (usually gas, brake and clutch)
  • mounting mechanisms for a shifter
  • ergonomics that attempt to replicate that of the vehicle being simulated

To qualify as a motion racing simulator, a chassis must have the above plus some form of motion simulator mechanism by which the chassis itself or the occupant is moved or the occupant is in some way fooled into believing that he or she is moving.

To qualify as a Full Motion Racing Simulator, a device must have the above and a minimum of a three degree of freedom (3DOF) motion system.

The SimXperience Stage 5 Full Motion Racing Simulator [1],SimCraft Apex 3 GT [2] and Force Dynamics 401 [3] are examples of full motion racing simulators implemented in different ways.
