Frida Torresblanco

Frida Torresblanco (born Frida Torres) is an award-winning Spanish American independent film and television producer known for her work with Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro.[1]

Frida has produced a variety of independent films including The Assassination of Richard Nixon starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts, John Malkovich's The Dancer Upstairs starring Javier Bardem, Rudo y Cursi, Crónicas, Locked In, Gaudi Afternoon and Guillermo del Toro's Academy Award-winning film Pan's Labyrinth. In 2010, Frida launched her production company Braven Films whose first film (Magic Magic, starring Michael Cera) was released in 2013.[2]

Early life and career

Frida studied in Madrid, where she completed Master's degrees in both literature and film, specializing in post-production and new media. During her studies, she started working as a production assistant and later as an assistant director, working her way up to producer. Next she worked at Lolafilms for 5 years where she was responsible for all international productions, including The Dancer Upstairs, directed by John Malkovich and Susan Seidelman's Gaudi Afternoon, starring Marcia Gay Harden.[1]

In 2002, Frida moved to New York City launch Alfonso Cuarón's film production company Esperanto Filmoj.[3] As a Head of the company, she served as Executive Producer and Creative On-Set Producer for the films The Assassination of Richard Nixon (directed by Niels Mueller and starring Sean Penn) and Cronicas, directed by Sebastián Cordero and starring John Leguizamo. In 2006, after eight years of partnership, Frida joined with Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro, to produce Pan's Labyrinth, which won three Oscars, three BAFTAs, a nomination for the Palme d'Or and a Golden Globe.[2] The following year, The Hollywood Reporter named Frida Torresblanco the 34th most powerful Latino in Hollywood.[4]

Recent career and Braven Films

In 2009, Frida was put in charge of developing new formats to target American audiences at the top Spanish TV house Zeppelin Television, which produced the Spanish version of Big Brother among other shows.[2] Frida also produced Rudo y Cursi (directed by Carlos Cuarón and starring Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna).[5] The film premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and has gone on to be one of the highest grossing films in Mexican history, making over 11 million dollars.[6]

In 2010, Frida launched her new film production company, Braven Films. The company "aims to be a space for filmmakers to freely create universal, contemporary, intelligent movies that will appeal to large audiences with a unique voice".[1] Braven Films' first film Magic Magic is a psychological thriller directed by Sebastián Silva and starring Michael Cera, Juno Temple and Emily Browning and had a a 2013 release.[7][8] Silva's last film The Maid (La Nana) won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and was nominated for a Golden Globe.[1]
