Freret is a neighborhood of the city of New Orleans. The Freret neighborhood in uptown New Orleans It also has a well-known commercial corridor. A subdistrict of the Uptown/Carrollton Area, its boundaries as defined by the City Planning Commission are: South Claiborne Avenue to the north, Napoleon Avenue to the east, LaSalle Street to the south and Jefferson Avenue to the west.

"Freret" is for Freret Street, which was named for William Freret, a mid-19th-century New Orleans mayor.

Freret is located at 29°56′15″N 90°06′25″W / 29.93750°N 90.10694°W / 29.93750; -90.10694 [1] and has an elevation of 0 feet (0.0 m).[2] According to the United States Census Bureau, the district has a total area of 0.19 square miles (0.5 km2). 0.19 square miles (0.5 km2) of which is land and 0.00 square miles (0.0 km2) (0.0%) of which is water.

Crime

In the 1980's the crime rate for Freret was above the national average. The decline began on the northern side of the neighborhood in the area above S Robertson St. At one point the area was nicknamed "Dope Alley," due to the amount of Heroin being sold. The overall crime rate in Freret is 21% higher than the national average. For every 100,000 people, there are 9.43 daily crimes that occur in Freret. Freret is safer than 64% of the cities in the Louisiana. In Freret you have a 1 in 30 chance of becoming a victim of any crime. The number of total year over year crimes in New Orleans has increased by 3%.[3]

The City Planning Commission defines the boundaries of Freret as these streets: South Claiborne Avenue, Napoleon Avenue, Danneel Street and Jefferson Avenue.[4]

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,715 people, 648 households, and 363 family households.[5]
