Noah Dingle

Noah Christopher Dingle (also Christopher Francis Tate Jnr, Noah Tate and Noah Sharma ) is the son of Charity (Emma Atkins) and Chris Tate (Peter Amory). He appeared from March 2004 to 2005 and returned in October 2009 along with Charity.

Noah is born while Charity was serving a life sentence for Chris' murder, even though Chris had actually committed suicide. Noah's paternity was doubtful as Charity had slept with her cousins, Cain (Jeff Hordley) and Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) as well as Chris, but DNA tests confirmed Noah was Chris' son. Charity, knowing she couldn't keep Noah with her in prison, sells him to Chris' sister Zoe Tate (Leah Bracknell), who calls him Christopher after Chris. In return for this, Zoe tells the court that Chris framed Charity for murder and she is freed. The courts, however, do not allow Zoe to adopt Noah, due to her current workload, other family commitments and mental illness so Charity takes him back and leaves the village in 2005.

In October 2009, Charity and Noah return to the village when Charity discovers that her fiancé, Michael, has been having an affair with her daughter, Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb). After the wedding is called off, Charity and Noah move in with Debbie and her daughter, Sarah Sugden (Sophia Amber Moore). Charity sends Noah to the local primary school as he is too old to go to playgroup with Sarah.

Noah believes that Michael was his father, so he was crushed to discover Chris was dead. Charity raises Noah's hope by getting engaged to Cain. Noah asks Cain to be his father and Cain, becoming tearful, tells Noah that he will always be there for him. Noah is thrilled, and is pleased to be living with Charity, Cain, Debbie and Sarah. Noah lives happily in Tug Ghyll up until early 2011 when Cain gets paranoid about Charity and Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) apparently "having an affair". Charity is devastated when Cain sleeps with Faye Lamb (Kim Thomson) and Charity realizes there is a spark between her and Jai and moves into Holdgate Farm with Jai, Noah and the Sharma family. Noah begins to miss Cain and is devastated when Cain gets attacked by his father Zak Dingle (Steve Halliwell). Noah is later crushed when Charity announces her engagement to Jai. Noah begins to warm to Jai, and tells him that he "doesn't mind" him marrying Charity, as long as he doesn't have to call him his father, like he did with Michael and Cain. Secretly, Noah doesn't think that the wedding will ever happen, so he is shocked when Charity gets married to Jai in 2012. In October 2012, Jai wants children but Charity says two is enough, as Jai has gained Debbie and Noah and has become a step-grandfather to Sarah, which Jai doesn't like, but laughs when Charity is named as Sarah's grandmother. Instead of having children, Jai asks Charity if he can adopt Noah, but Charity is secretly having regrets about the marriage after seeing Cain and Moira Barton (Natalie J. Robb) together but they settle to change Noah's name to Sharma. Noah loves playing on the Xbox with Jai and his father Rishi Sharma (Bhasker Patel) and loves being one of the Sharma family.

In 2013, Noah was upset when Charity left Jai following the revelation of his fling with Rachel Breckle (Gemma Oaten) and also with the fact they had to live with Debbie, Sarah and Debbie's son Jack Sugden (Seth). Charity later changes both her and Noah's surname back to Tate. In 2014, he is annoyed when Charity starts dating Declan Macey (Jason Merrells) and starts to completely ignore him when he reveals they are engaged. However, after Charity books an abortion appointment, Declan tells Noah that Charity is pregnant.

In January 2015, Charity is sent to prison for two years after being found guilty of perverting the course of justice, so Charity leaves Noah to be looked after by Cain and Moira. When Charity is released in February 2016, she buys into The Woolpack with Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter). In August 2016, Noah is responsible for bullying Chas' son Aaron Dingle's (Danny Miller) half-sister, Liv Flaherty (Isobel Steele) online and is found out by Aaron's boyfriend Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) who threatens him to shut down the website. In October 2016, Noah gives Moira a card when her daughter Holly Barton (Sophie Powles) is found dead from a drug overdose.

Matthew King

Colleen King

Colleen King, played by Melanie Ash, is the first wife of Carl King (Tom Lister), appearing in 2004, 2005 and 2010.

Colleen is divorced from Carl, with whom she had two children Thomas (Jack Ferguson; Connor Hill) and Anya (Ceryen Dean; Millie Archer). She has custody of the children, and appears in the village briefly in 2004 and 2005 when they visit Carl. Colleen returned in January 2010 with Thomas and Anya as she was going to visit her husband, Stefan, in hospital after had been injured in a work accident, and her sister would not have them so she dropped them off at Carl's whilst she nursed Stefan back to health. In April 2010, Colleen returned and told Carl she wanted to emigrate to Saudi Arabia and take the children with her. She left with Thomas and Anya the following day.

Thomas King

Thomas King is the son of Carl (Tom Lister) and Colleen King (Melanie Ash). He appeared in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013.

Named after his grandfather, Tom King (Ken Farrington), Thomas's parents separated when he was young. He first appears in 2004 when his mother tells Carl she wants a divorce and initially refuses to let him see the children. However, Thomas and his sister, Anya (Ceryen Dean; Lauren Sheriston), visit their father in 2005, 2006 and June 2007. In February 2009, he and Anya visit to meet their new stepmother, Lexi Nicholls (Sally Oliver). Thomas is meant to attend the wedding but stays at home, due to chicken pox. In January 2010, Colleen arrives with the children, asking Carl to look after them as her husband has had an accident at work. They move into Mill Cottage temporarily. Thomas and Anya cause problems for Ashley (John Middleton) and Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy) and Edna Birch (Shirley Stelfox). In April, Colleen returns and tells Carl she wants to emigrate to Saudi Arabia and take the children with her and they leave the next day. Thomas and Anya return eight months later on Christmas Eve in preparation for Carl's wedding to Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) the following day but the wedding ends in chaos when Chas jilts Carl and reveals his affair with Eve Jenson (Suzanne Shaw), Carl takes Thomas and Anya back home to Saudi Arabia.

Thomas and Anya return to the village in October 2012, following their father's murder. Thomas asks his uncle Jimmy (Nick Miles) why Chas, believed to be Carl's killer, killed Carl. Jimmy is hesitant in telling them so Thomas goes to the local garage and asks Chas's brother, Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), and he tells Thomas that Chas killed Carl because he tried to rape her. Thomas later confronts Jimmy with this and Jimmy admits that Cain is telling the truth and that Carl was trying to rape Chas when he was killed. Thomas angrily tears up a photograph of his father. Thomas gets upset during his father's funeral service and angrily blurts out that Carl is a rapist in front of the congregation in the church as Jimmy is reading a eulogy about Carl. Thomas also claims that his father got what he deserved and leaves the church in a distressed state. Edna finds Thomas at the Cricket Pavilion and attempts to talk him round, telling him that he only has one chance to say goodbye to his father. Thomas accompanies Edna to the cemetery in time for the burial and comforts Anya by the graveside. Following the wake, Thomas and Anya return to the cemetery to discover Cameron Murray (Dominic Power), who is Carl's real killer, by the grave. He tells them he is sorry for their loss and leaves. The day after the funeral, Sean Spencer (Luke Roskell) invites Thomas and Anya to a party that his father, Dan (Liam Fox), is holding in the cafe but Thomas is too upset to go. On 5 November, Thomas and Anya return to Saudi Arabia. They bid an emotional farewell to Jimmy and his wife, Nicola (Nicola Wheeler), and their aunt, Scarlett (Kelsey-Beth Crossley), drives them to the airport.

Thomas returns to the village in January 2013, when he is revealed to have been stalking Chas. Thomas was sending her photos in the post of her and Carl together with her eyes on the pictures scrateched out, telephoning the pub on a withheld number, and slightly injuring her when he throws a glass bottle at her outside The Woolpack. He is revealed as the stalker when, after he graffities the wall of the pub's living room and is disturbed by Gabby Thomas (Annelise Manojlovic). Chas and Jimmy chase him and apprehend him when he trips. Thomas reveals that he wanted revenge on Chas for killing his father. She tries to apologize and explains that she was acting in self-defence but Thomas refuses to forgive her. Jimmy lets Thomas stay with him, much to Nicola's disapproval. Jimmy intends to send Thomas back to Saudi Arabia but Thomas begs to stay, claiming that his mother does not care about him. Feeling guilty, Jimmy agrees and gives Thomas a job cleaning the haulage firms trucks. Nicola's sister, Bernice Blackstock (Samantha Giles), gets her boyfriend Steve Harland (Tom Mannion) to give Thomas a job at the stables at Home Farm. Still wanting revenge on Chas, Thomas begins manipulating Sean, claiming that Chas had been bad-mouthing his father, behind his back. An infuriated Sean throws a brick through the window of the Woolpack. Sean confesses this to Steve who sacks Thomas because of his trouble making.

When Cameron, now in a relationship with Chas, returns to the village after visiting his children in Jersey, he warns Thomas to stay away and leave Chas alone. Thomas continues to get up to mischief with Sean, stealing Sandy Thomas' (Freddie Jones) mobility scooter and damage it by driving it through a ford. Thomas also befriends local girls, Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper) and Gemma Andrews (Tendai Rinomhota). Belle develops a crush on Thomas and poses for provocative pictures which Gemma takes on her mobile phone in an attempt to get him to notice her.

Nicola convinces Chas to give Thomas a job as a kitchen hand at the Woolpack. Thomas agrees and tells Chas he wants a fresh start. Cameron is unnerved by Thomas's presence and tries to bully him out of his job, accusing him of still wanting revenge on Chas and criticizing every mistake he makes. Eventually when he discovers Thomas upset and crying, he feels guilty and gives Thomas a rise in his wages. Thomas accuses him of being "weird".

Thomas and Belle then begin a relationship after kissing at Sandy's 80th birthday party. They keep it a secret from their families at first but the truth eventually comes out. Jimmy and Nicola ban Thomas from seeing Belle and Belle's parents ban her from seeing Thomas. Thomas goes to visit Belle at Wishing Well Cottage and her father Zak (Steve Halliwell) arrives home to discover them kissing and orders Thomas to leave.

Jimmy reveals that he intends to send Thomas back to his mother in Saudi Arabia. He and Nicola then convince Bernice to sack Thomas from his job at the pub. Thomas and Belle decide to run away together and, with Sean's help, they steal Dan's camper van and drive away from the village. Belle's mother, Lisa (Jane Cox), becomes convinced that Thomas intends to attack Belle, like his father did to Chas. She calls the police and reports that Thomas abducted Belle. When Belle reveals that Carl had been in the camper the night he died, Thomas becomes upset. He turns the vehicle round and drives them back to the village, telling Belle that he wants to do the right thing. Jimmy and Nicola then arrange for Thomas to be sent home. On the day he is due to depart, Nicola realizes that Jimmy is upset by Thomas's departure. As he is about to leave, she asks him to stay. Thomas then goes to see Belle and she tells him that she hates her parents and blames them for ruining their relationship and her life. Thomas feels guilty and decides to leave after all. He steals Dan's camper van again, and flees the village. The police later tell Jimmy and Nicola that the camper has been found at the airport. Jimmy telephones Colleen in Saudi Arabia and she tells him that Thomas had arrived home and shut himself in his room, not wanting to speak to anyone.

Anya King

Andrea "Anya" King is the daughter of Carl (Tom Lister) and Colleen King (Melanie Ash). She appeared in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012.

Anya's parents separated when she was young and she first appears in 2004 when her mother Colleen tells Carl that she wants a divorce and initially refuses to let him see the children.

However, Anya and her brother, Thomas (Jack Ferguson; Mark Flanagan), visit their father in 2005, 2006 and June 2007. In February 2009, she and Thomas visit, following Carl's engagement to Lexi Nicholls (Sally Oliver). Anya is meant to attend her father's wedding the following month but stays at home with chicken pox.

In January 2010, Colleen arrives with the children, asking Carl to look after them as her husband has had an accident at work. They move into Mill Cottage temporarily. In April 2010, Colleen returns and tells Carl she wants to emigrate to Saudi Arabia and take the children with her. She leaves with Anya and Thomas the following day.

Anya returns with Thomas eight months later on Christmas Eve in preparation for Carl's wedding to Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) the following day. After the wedding ends in chaos with Chas jilting Carl and revealing his affair with Eve Jenson (Suzanne Shaw), Carl takes Anya and Thomas back home to Saudi Arabia.

Anya and Thomas return to the village in October 2012, following their father's murder. Anya is initially hostile to her uncle Jimmy (Nick Miles) and his wife Nicola (Nicola Wheeler), stating that Mill Cottage is smaller than she remembered it and that their home in Saudi Arabia has two swimming pools. The following day, Anya goes through her father's belongings with Jimmy and he is forced to tell her and Thomas that Chas, who is believed to be Carl's killer, killed him because he tried to rape her. Jimmy later gives Anya Carl's hip flask.

Anya goes to visit the offices of the haulage company to see where her father worked and meets Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins), Carl and Jimmy's business partner who had been going to buy Carl out of the business before his death. Thinking that Carl's shares will be inherited by his children, Charity offers to agree a price with Anya if she stays behind after the funeral but Rodney Blackstock ushers Anya out, accusing Charity of trying to rip her off and takes her home. Anya's aunt Scarlett Nicholls (Kelsey-Beth Crossley) warns her to steer clear of Charity and that she is using her.

During Carl's funeral, Anya is upset when Thomas causes a scene in the church, revealing Carl's rape attempt to the congregation and claiming that he got what he deserved before leaving the church in a distressed state. Anya is comforted by Scarlett and reconciles with Thomas by the graveside during the burial. Later, Thomas and Anya return to the cemetery following the wake and meet Cameron Murray (Dominic Power), who unbeknownst to them is their father's real killer, by the graveside. He tells them that he is sorry for their loss and leaves.

The following day, Sean Spencer (Luke Roskell) invites Thomas and Anya to party his father Dan (Liam Fox) is holding in the café. Thomas is too upset to attend but Anya goes to the party with Scarlett. Anya attempts to talk to Sean, who is attracted to her, but he follows his father's advice and plays hard to get with her. Anya is unimpressed and leaves with Scarlett and Sean is angry with his father for interfering.

On 5 November, Anya and Thomas return to their mother in Saudi Arabia. Before they leave, Scarlett warns them to call them if Charity tries to contact them regarding their father's shares of the haulage firm. Anya and Thomas bid an emotional farewell to Jimmy and Nicola and Anya promises to speak to her cousin Angelica via a skype connection. Scarlett then drives them to the airport.

PC Mike Swirling

Police Constable Mike Swirling, played by Andy Moore,^[1] is a local police officer. He made his first screen appearance on 2 April 2004. In his first appearance, he is not named and is simply credited as "Policeman".

PC Swirling first appears when Terry Woods (Emmerdale) (Billy Hartman) calls the police to prevent his ex-wife Dawn (Julia Mallam) from taking their son TJ (Connor Lee) out of the country without his consent. Swirling warns Dawn that she will be arrested if she attempts to leave the country with TJ. Swirling is called to the local woods by Edna Birch (Shirley Stelfox) when she discovers Carl King (Tom Lister) and Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) having sex there. Chas is verbally abusive to Swirling and he arrests her and Carl, later charging them with gross indecency. Swirling investigates a fire at Butler's Farm and questions Andy Sugden (Kelvin Fletcher) about the blaze. Daz Eden (Luke Tittensor) tells Swirling that he had caused the fire by discarding a lit cigarette. Swirling continues to question Andy and Daz, but they stick to their story. Swirling arrests Sam Dingle (James Hooton) for being drunk and disorderly when he smashes the window of the village Post Office. Swirling later questions Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb) after she gives her daughter Sarah (Lily-Mae Bartley) away to Emily Kirk (Kate McGregor), who has left the country with her. Debbie's grandfather, Zak (Steve Halliwell), intervenes and tells Swirling that Emily had taken Sarah with her family's consent to give Debbie a break as she had been suffering from post natal depression. Swirling accepts this explanation and leaves.

Swirling informs Pearl Ladderbanks (Meg Johnson) that he and his colleagues have been unable to retrieve her money that she had lost in an internet scam. Swirling arrests Terry and Jean Hope (Susan Penhaligon) for public indecency after discovering them having sex in their boss Tom King's (Ken Farrington) car by the side of the road. He releases them with a caution the following day. Swirling and a colleague arrest Shadrach Dingle (Andy Devine) for burglary and criminal damage after he steals from the village shop. He later questions Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) about Adam Forsythe's (Richard Shelton) whereabouts, and attends the scene of the King's River show home explosion, where he turns away reporter John McNally (Steven Farebrother) and allows Chas and Zak past the police cordon to look for Shadrach. The following week, Swirling appears during the investigation of Terence Turner's (Nick Brimble) murder. Swirling arrests Del Dingle (Hayley Tamaddon) for wounding Toni Daggert (Kerry Stacey), questioning Chas as a witness the following day, and searches Wishing Well Cottage for Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), after he is implicated in Tom's kidnapping. Toni visits Swirling at the police station to get an update on her case and he offers to make enquiries for her. Swirling visits Del at work the following day and escorts her to the police station where he lets her off with a caution. Swirling questions Viv Hope (Deena Payne) on suspicion of fly tipping after she dumps a new pram for her unborn twins in a field, and she is forced to tell him that the pram was stolen property. Swirling later investigates a robbery at the Grange Bed and Breakfast, taking details from Terry. The robbers also target the Woolpack Pub and Swirling takes details from Val Lambert (Charlie Hardwick) and Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock), who the robbers had assaulted, and Marlon's wife Donna (Verity Rushworth). Marlon tells Swirling that his attackers were looking for his brother Eli (Joseph Gilgun) who owed them money. After being tipped off by Louise Appleton (Emily Symons), Swirling escorts a drunk and underage Jasmine Thomas (Jenna-Louise Coleman) home from the Woolpack and discovers Val has illicitly bought two crates of wine from Jamie Hope (Alex Carter).

Swirling appears when a fight breaks out in the street between Carl and Jamie. Jamie presses charges and Swirling arrests Carl for assault. He is then called out to the Post Office by Viv when Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper) steals a packet of sweets, and then insults her. Whilst waiting for the police, Viv locks Belle and her mother, Lisa (Jane Cox), in the shop. When Swirling and a colleague arrive, they are both unsympathetic to Viv and Lisa's claims and tell them that both were acting like children. Swirling threatens to charge them with wasting police time, before leaving. He visits the village again when Jo Stiles (Roxanne Pallett) calls the police after believing Billy Hopwood (David Crellin) had assaulted Andy. Swirling arrests Billy and after taking a statement from Andy, he charges Billy with assault. Andy later changes his statement and Swirling releases Billy. Swirling informs Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy) that her parents Doug (Duncan Preston) and Hilary Potts (Paula Wilcox) have been injured in a car crash. Swirling appears at the hospital after Marlon is shot during a robbery at a betting shop. The next day, Swirling accompanies DCI Grace Barraclough (Glynis Barber) when she questions Marlon about the incident. Swirling appears when Eli stages a fake robbery at Tug Ghyll. Swirling appears when Scarlett Nicholls (Kelsey-Beth Crossley) goes missing. He takes details from Scarlett's mother Carrie (Linda Lusardi) and half-brother Jimmy King (Nick Miles), and unintentionally offends Jimmy when he makes a remark about stroppy teenagers. Swirling questions Eli in connection with some stolen DVDs from a warehouse robbery and discovers him and Gennie Walker (Sian Reese-Williams) in possession of drugs taken from the veterinary surgery. Swirling arrests Eli on suspicion of burglary and theft of the drugs. Swirling appears when Donna and Ross Kirk (Samuel Anderson) are nearly killed in a car chase.

Swirling questions Andy after he tries to run over Cain in his car. He appears when Rodney Blackstock's (Patrick Mower) car crashes into the Farm shop. He is later called to Mulberry Cottage when Laurel accuses Sally Spode (Siân Reeves) of trying to kill her and kidnapping her son Arthur (Alfie Clarke). Swirling appears again when Faye Lamb (Kim Thomson) reports Mark Wylde's (Maxwell Caulfield) disappearance and Natasha Wylde (Amanda Donohoe) tells him about Mark's bigamy. Swirling returns when he, Faye and Natasha are called out to the hospital to try and identify a body but it is not Mark's. Swirling appears again at Home Farm after Mark's credit card is used to purchase some flowers which Natasha and her son, Nathan (Lyndon Ogbourne), both knew were not from Mark although they do not let on about it.

Swirling later appears at Butler's Farm when John Barton (James Thornton) reports his daughter, Holly's (Sophie Powles) disappearance. Swirling appears again at Butler's Farm after it is burgled. Swirling and his colleague give John and his wife Moira (Natalie J. Robb) advice on not leaving windows or doors open. John tells Swirling that he suspects that Holly committed the burglary to fund her drug addiction. The next day, Swirling calls John and Moira in to the police station and shows them CCTV footage of Holly selling their television at a pawnbroker's shop, confirming that she was responsible for the break-in. Moira later tracks Holly down and takes her to the police station where Swirling arrests her and she confesses to carrying out the burglary. When he asks Moira if she wants Holly to be charged she agrees but Swirling suggests she and John get Holly some counselling. Swirling appears at the police station when Moira is arrested for possession of heroin which she had been going to give to Holly. Swirling recognizes Moira and he interviews her along with the arresting officer. Swirling tells Moira she could go to prison for the offence. He offers to help Moira get a more lenient sentence if she agrees to tell him everything she knows about where the heroin came from and she does so.

Swirling visits the offices of Emmerdale Haulage to inform Carl that Jimmy's van has been discovered in Peterborough with bloodstains inside. He returns to inform Jimmy's wife Nicola (Nicola Wheeler) that the blood found in the van has been positively identified as Jimmy's. The following day, Swirling returns to tell Nicola and Carl that a man fitting Jimmy's description has been located in a hospital in Nottingham.

Swirling is called to Holdgate Farm after it is burgled by Cain. Swirling takes details of the burglary from Cain's ex-girlfriend and second cousin Charity Tate (Emma Atkins), her current boyfriend Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson), whose car Cain had stolen, and Jai's brother Nikhil (Rik Makarem), all of whom implicate Cain as the culprit. Swirling later visits Cain at Tug Ghyll and questions him about his whereabouts. Despite Cameron Murray (Dominic Power) giving him an alibi, Swirling arrests Cain and takes him to the police station. He later visits Cain's colleague Ryan Lamb (James Sutton), who Cain had tricked into acting as a lookout, at his home. The following morning, Swirling visits Cain in his cell at the police station and informs him that they questioned Ryan and released him and that they believed that Cain had acted alone. Swirling warns Cain that he faces a long prison sentence but Cain is defiant and taunts Swirling, saying that they have no evidence against him and that they should release him. Swirling ignores him and leaves the cell. Later, Charity comes to the police station to change her statement and tells Swirling that she is no longer certain that it was Cain who carried out the burglary. Swirling tells Charity that if she lets Cain get away with it then she will never be free of him but she ignores him and Swirling has no choice but to release Cain.

Swirling returns to the village when Hazel Rhodes (Pauline Quirke) discovers a newborn baby abandoned in the village telephone box. Swirling visits Dale Head and questions Hazel, Bob Hope (Tony Audenshaw), Lisa and Zak. He states that the police will make an appeal for the baby's mother to come forward and leaves. Swirling is again called to Mulberry Cottage, this time by Edna, and arrests Ashley Thomas (John Middleton) for assaulting his father Sandy (Freddie Jones).

Swirling appears at the garage to inform Cain that his car, which he had reported stolen, had been found burnt out in a field. Swirling investigates a break-in at the Veterinary Surgery. After taking details of the crime, Swirling advises Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) to keep the surgery door locked when it is empty then leaves.

Swirling is called to the café when Laurel sees a man she thinks carjacked her the previous month. Swirling and a colleague arrest the man and he tells Laurel that they will be in touch. Swirling later visits Laurel and Marlon, now her boyfriend, at home and explains that the arrested man was not Laurel's carjacker as he had a solid alibi for the day of the crime and had been released without charge.

Swirling appears at Mill Cottage to question Nicola and Charity after Jimmy is injured in a road accident when he crashes one of the haulage firms' lorries. Swirling requests the vehicle's tachograph for the traffic unit in order to work out if Jimmy was working over his prescribed hours. Nicola tells Swirling that Jimmy had been at home, asleep, with her for most of the day prior to the accident. Swirling then goes to the hospital to speak to Jimmy and discovers Charity, who is Jimmy's business partner, by his bedside, urging him to back up Nicola's story. Jimmy tells Swirling the truth about the accident, that he had been working over his hours and that he had taken a phone call from Nicola in the moments before the crash. Charity asks Swirling what punishment Jimmy faces and Swirling explains that it would depend what Jimmy is charged with. The following day, Swirling visits the haulage firm offices to question Nicola about her statement, telling her it doesn't add up. Nicola is forced to admit she lied and when she questions Swirling's job, he tells her that drivers working over their hours are dangerous to other motorists and could cause fatalities. Charity assures Swirling that the business is well run and that the accident was a one-off. To provide an explanation to why Nicola lied, Charity then tells Swirling about Jimmy and Nicola's marital problems and that they had been struggling to pay for their daughter Angelica's (Rebecca Bakes) private school fees, and that Nicola had effectively prostituted herself to her sister Bernice Blackstock's (Samantha Giles) boyfriend Steve Harland (Tom Mannion) to fund this. Swirling explains that Jimmy will be charged with careless driving and would have to pay to go on a driver's training course. He warns Nicola not to lie to the police again and states that if Jimmy complies with the course, no further action will be taken.

Swirling again appears at Butler's Farm when Laurel discovers that her real carjacker, Ross Barton (Michael Parr), is staying there. Swirling arrives in time to witness Laurel attack Ross and he arrests Ross for the robbery. Ross then reveals that Laurel had previously followed him home and threatened him with a pair of scissors in his flat, so Swirling also arrests Laurel for assault. At the police station, Ross denies being responsible for the carjacking and Swirling is forced to release him due to a lack of evidence. Swirling then charges Laurel with assault.

Swirling is present at the police station after Amy (Chelsea Halfpenny) and Kerry Wyatt (Laura Norton) spend the night in the cells after being arrested for harassing Joanie Wright (Denise Black). Kerry attempts to flirt with Swirling and refers to him as "Inspector" and he is unimpressed. Swirling asks Amy if it was the first time she had breached the restraining order Joanie had issued against her and when she confirms that it was, Swirling releases her and Kerry with a caution and drives them both back to the village. Swirling investigates a burglary at Mill Cottage, committed by Anton Bluth (Andrew Dowbiggin), a man who Bernice had invited round on a date. Swirling takes details of the crime from Bernice, Nicola and Jimmy. Nicola tells Swirling that Anton had handcuffed Bernice to a bed whilst he ransacked the house and stole items of value. Swirling finds this amusing and Nicola is defensive of her sister and makes a dig at Swirling about his marriage.

Swirling appears at the garage, enquiring about some stolen cars which are missing. Cain denies that the cars were at the garage and Swirling checks the garage log book, which is clean. The following day, Swirling arrests Debbie for assault after she stabs a garage customer in the leg with a screwdriver, when he makes advances towards her. At the police station, Swirling questions Debbie and she admits the assault, claiming that she was scared and lashed out instinctively. Swirling releases Debbie on bail and she asks him how the assault victim is, and Swirling explains that he is still in hospital recovering from his injuries. The next day, Swirling visits Debbie at the garage and explains that the victim had dropped the charges against her.

Swirling is called to the village again, when a fight breaks out outside the café between Eric and delivery driver Tiny Alcock (Tony Pritchard). Swirling arrests Eric for assault after he punches Tiny in front of him. He also arrests Val, now Eric's wife, for criminal damage after she scratches Tiny's van with her fob of keys. Swirling then arrests Val's sister Diane Sugden (Elizabeth Estensen) after she accidentally elbows him in the face whilst trying to restrain Val. At the police station Swirling gets fed up with Eric, Val and Diane's bickering and orders them to be held in the cells overnight. The following day, Swirling releases Eric and Diane without charge, but charges Val with criminal damage, threatening behavior and assault, much to her anger and outrage.

Later in the week, Swirling appears at the police station and is sympathetic to Donna, after she discovers that her assets have been liquidized after a company she had invested in had been declared bankrupt, causing her to lose all her life savings. Swirling then gives Donna an evidence bag of stolen jewellery to catalogue. Swirling sits with Donna as she bags the evidence and they have a conversation about their children and parenting. Swirling remarks that his wife would have liked one of the items of jewellery and mentions the Christmas party as being something to look forward to, not knowing Donna is terminally ill and only has months left to live. He then leaves her on her own.

Swirling and Donna bring a man into the station after arresting him for handling stolen goods, including a mobile phone on which he had photographed himself. Swirling and Donna start bagging up the evidence and Swirling tells Donna that he enjoys working with her. Swirling appears in the village with Donna, to give people crime prevention advice. He reveals that items have been going missing from the evidence room, worrying Donna, as she had been stealing them to sell and raise money. Swirling also reveals that a raid is being planned on the home of a known criminal, Gary North (Fergus O'Donnell). Swirling and Donna visit the garage and speak to Ross, who is working there, and Swirling looks round the building for any security weak spots.

Swirling is partnered with Donna again, and whilst they are eating in the café, Donna spikes his coffee with laxatives, forcing him to call in sick for the afternoon. The following week, Swirling visits Marlon and Laurel whilst investigating Donna's death. He shows them photographs of Gary North and asks if Donna had mentioned anything to them about him but they claim not to know anything. Swirling feels guilty for not being with Donna when she died. He promises not to give up on the investigation into her death and leaves. Swirling returns when Donna's daughter April (Amelia Flanagan) goes missing. He questions Ross, who was the last person to see April, and does his best to reassure Marlon, who is April's father. Swirling suggests to Marlon and Laurel that they make a statement to the press appealing for information. Just as Swirling is arranging a press conference in the village hall, Ross finds April and returns her safe and sound. Swirling takes Ross away for questioning and Ross explains that he found April hiding in one of the cars in the garage. Marlon thanks Swirling for his help in searching for April.

Later in the week, Swirling attends Donna's funeral along with some of his colleagues. He is forced to intervene when a fight breaks out between Ross and Marlon. Swirling attempts to arrest Ross but is forced to let him go when Marlon admits that he had started the fight, not Ross. Swirling then attends Donna's wake in The Woolpack. Swirling pulls Laurel over in her car as she is driving April home from school, for having a broken rear tail light. He breathalyses her after she tells him she had a drink in the Woolpack and she is over the legal limit, so Swirling arrests her for drink driving. He later releases Laurel on bail and drives her and April home. Two days later, Swirling visits Laurel at work and tells her that she will be charged with drink driving.

The following week, Swirling appears at Holdgate Farm and questions Jai about Rachel Breckle's (Gemma Oaten) whereabouts after her sister Ali Spencer (Kelli Hollis) reports her missing and accuses Jai of kidnapping his and Rachel's son and Ali's nephew, Archie. Jai tells Swirling that he does not know where Rachel is and that she had given Archie to him voluntarily as she had been seeking help for a drug addiction that she had developed. Ali then bursts into the house and insists to Swirling that Jai is lying but Swirling tells her that they cannot take any further action as there is no evidence that a crime had been committed.

Swirling appears at the garage and informs Cain that his car, which Moira, now his wife, had reported stolen, had been found in Dover and CCTV footage showed Cain abandoning it and looking scared. Cain tells Swirling that he had left his car as he had been driving for hours and had started to feel tired and had not wanted to take any risks with his safety by continuing. He then tells Swirling that he lied to Moira about his car being stolen as he had not wanted her to know he had been driving dangerously as he thought it would worry her because John, her previous husband, had died in a road accident. Swirling accepts this explanation and leaves.

Swirling appears when Sunil Malla (Alton Letto) reports his car stolen. However, Sunil's ex-fiancée Carly Hope (Gemma Atkinson) then reveals that Sunil's car is parked nearby and Swirling leaves after concluding that no crime had been committed. Swirling appears at Home Farm after a message accusing Lachlan White (Thomas Atkinson) of being a sex offender and warning girls to be wary of him, appears online on a social networking website. Swirling and a colleague remove the information from the Internet and he assures Lachlan's mother Chrissie (Louise Marwood) and grandfather Lawrence (John Bowe) that they will find the person responsible for posting the message. Swirling later visits David (Matthew Wolfenden) and Alicia Metcalfe (Natalie Anderson), after discovering that Alicia had posted the message. Alicia admits to doing so and when she insists that she won't take her campaign against Lachlan any further, Swirling lets her off with a warning.

Swirling appears at Holdgate Farm when Jai reports Rachel for assaulting his father, Rishi (Bhasker Patel). Rishi denies Rachel hurt him deliberately and refuses to press charges and Swirling leaves. Jai goes after him and tells him that Rishi had not wanted to press charges because he was embarrassed at being hit by a woman and Rachel had threatened him. Jai also tells Swirling that Rachel has a violent temper and that Archie had been hospitalized with a broken arm due to this. Swirling later visits Rachel to question her but she tells him to leave and pushes him and he arrests her for assaulting a police officer.

Swirling takes a statement from Adam Barton (Adam Thomas) at the police station after Ashley is hit by Victoria Sugden's (Isobel Hodgins) car and badly injured. The following day, Swirling visits Ashley at the hospital after he regains consciousness to question him about the accident. Swirling later visits the Woolpack and arrests Victoria on suspicion of committing hit-and-run.

Swirling questions Eric at the police station after he is arrested for throwing a paint bomb at Chrissie in court. Swirling is sympathetic to Eric, who is grieving for Val, and suggests he get professional help for his bereavement, but Eric tells Swirling to charge him as he does not want to live in the village alongside Chrissie. The following week, Swirling appears at the hospital and takes a statement from Jai after he accidentally strikes Megan Macey (Gaynor Faye) with his car. Swirling then questions Megan about the accident. Swirling searches for Kirin Kotecha (Adam Fielding) after he is involved in a hit-and-run accident in which Tess Harris (Nicola Stephenson) is killed. Swirling questions Carly and Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) who tell him that Kirin has left. Swirling tells them to contact him if Kirin gets in touch. The following week, Swirling informs Kirin's father Rakesh (Pasha Bocarie), that his car has been located in Hull and CCTV footage shows Kirin abandoning it and boarding a ferry. Rakesh tells Swirling that he thought Kirin was visiting friends in Liverpool and when Swirling asks if Kirin has been in touch, Rakesh denies it. The following day, Swirling tells Rakesh that the police have information that he has received a letter from Kirin, but Rakesh continues to deny everything. Swirling then appears at the garage and informs Cain that the garage breakdown truck was seen parked near the scene of a robbery at a jewellery shop in Harrogate. Swirling later investigates a fire and break-in at Sharma & Sharma's sweet factory and takes details from Jai and Rishi. After Jai implicates him as a suspect, Swirling arrests Zak on suspicion of arson.

Swirling visits The Woolpack and informs Victoria that the police have arrested a man who had robbed from her business and assaulted her, two weeks previously. He asks her to come to the police station to formally identify her attacker. Swirling pulls Andy over in his car and tells him that his vehicle was seen driving dangerously earlier in the day. He then asks Andy to open the boot and discovers a shotgun, used to shoot Lawrence, inside. Swirling brings Cain home after arresting him for being drunk and disorderly. Later in the week, Swirling is called to Butler's Farm after Holly dies of a drug overdose. After the investigation is completed, he arranges for the Coroner's Office to remove Holly's body from the scene.

Swirling visits the garage again, searching for stolen cars. He looks round the premises and does not find anything suspicious. The following week, Swirling visits Butler's Farm and informs Debbie that CCTV footage showed her getting into a stolen car which had been involved in a hit-and-run incident. He takes her to the police station for questioning. Swirling appears at the Woolpack when a woman called Eileen (Zoe Lambert) accuses Faith Dingle (Sally Dexter) of killing her father. When Swirling attempts to question Faith, she flees and he and a colleague give pursuit and catch up with her outside. Swirling is forced to restrain Faith when she attacks Eileen and he takes her to the police station for questioning. The following week, Swirling questions Ronnie Hale (John McArdle) about the theft of a JCB digger. When it is discovered that Adam had taken the digger, Chrissie, who had called the police on Ronnie, is forced to apologize to Swirling for wasting police time. The following day, Swirling appears when a guest at the B&B accuses Eric of spying on her through her bedroom window. Eric tells Swirling that he had been trying to establish whether Chrissie had been staying at the B&B secretly and had got the wrong window. Swirling questions Cain after he is found to be in possession of some stolen mobile phones and escorts him to the police station. At the station, Cain taunts Swirling and refuses his offer of refreshments. Swirling continues to question Cain and after revealing that Cain and his car had been caught on CCTV at the scene of the crime, he offers Cain a deal. Cain tells Swirling to involve CID and agrees to speak to them.

Swirling visits Dan Spencer (Liam Fox) and gets him to positively identify Josh Crowther (Conner Chapman) and Jamie Halstead (Jake Hayward) as the culprits responsible for a robbery at the village shop. Two weeks later, Swirling and a colleague search Dale Head for evidence after Dan is arrested for assaulting Josh. This angers Kerry, who is Dan's partner, and she accuses Swirling of not doing his job properly. The following week, Swirling appears at the police station when Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh) confesses to attacking Josh. Swirling doesn't believe her so Tracy reveals that she had recorded the assault on her mobile phone and rummages through her bag only to find her phone is missing. Kerry later brings Tracy's phone to the police station and gives it to Swirling. Swirling investigates a robbery at Home Farm, committed by Rakesh, in which he had assaulted Lachlan. Lachlan and Chrissie tell Swirling that Rakesh's wife Priya (Fiona Wade) had helped him escape, so Swirling arrests her for assisting an offender. Swirling appears in the village after Harriet Finch (Katherine Dow Blyton) is stabbed, questioning Bernice as a potential witness in the café whilst his colleagues question other villagers. Swirling then questions Finn Barton (Joe Gill) about the stabbing. Finn tells Swirling that he was out walking when he witnessed the attack and rushed to help Harriet and called an ambulance for her. Finn also tells Swirling that he did not get a good look at Harriet's attackers and only gives Swirling a vague description of them and their car.

Swirling appears at Home Farm when a gun goes missing during a clay pigeon shoot. He questions Lawrence and Lachlan who tell him the gun has been found. Swirling requests to check all of the guns and their certificates and Lachlan directs him to where the shoot is being held. When Swirling arrives at the shoot, Chrissie informs him that the gun has been found and returned. He asks to inspect all the guns and their certificates and paperwork and Sam shows him and helps him with the task. Swirling appears again at Home Farm after Lachlan goes missing. After searching the house, Swirling informs Chrissie and Lawrence that Lachlan still hasn't been found. Lawrence then goes with Swirling to continue with the search.

Swirling appears at Butler's Farm, searching for Adam, after he escapes from prison and goes on the run whilst awaiting sentence for killing Emma Barton (Gillian Kearney). Swirling searches the whole farm and doesn't find anything. Moira asks Swirling to contact DS Benton (Justin Pierre), the police officer in charge of the investigation into Emma's death, in order for her to speak to him and he agrees to do so. Swirling calls Charity and Debbie into the police station after they are arrested for vandalizing Joseph Tate's (Ned Porteous) house. Swirling reveals that Joseph has agreed to drop the charges against them on the condition that they apologize to him. Charity and Debbie reluctantly apologize to Joseph and Swirling releases them without charge.

Swirling visits the Woolpack and warns Charity to stay away from DI Mark Bails (Rocky Marshall) who she had been stalking. Charity reluctantly agrees to do so and Swirling and his colleague leave. Swirling discovers Debbie with Ross's car parked by the side of the road. She tells him that the car had broken down and she was fixing it for Ross. Swirling reveals that a car matching the description of Ross's vehicle had been seen driving erratically in the area but Debbie denies that Ross's car was the vehicle in question. When it is discovered that the car had run out of petrol, Swirling offers to look in the boot for a spare petrol can but before he can do so he is called away to the scene of a burglary.

Swirling pulls over Joseph's car after it is stolen by Sarah (now Katie Hill), Leanna Cavanagh (Mimi Slinger), Noah Dingle (Jack Downham) and Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) who have gone joyriding in it. The teenagers flee on foot and Swirling and his colleague give chase. They catch up with Sarah, who is ill and out of breath, and Swirling arrests her. At the police station, Swirling questions Sarah with Faith acting as her appropriate adult. Sarah refuses to name her accomplices and claims that she had been acting alone when stealing the car. She then tells Swirling that Debbie was involved in Ross's acid attack. Swirling fetches DS Flanagan (Tom Roberts) the police officer investigating the acid attack and Sarah tells them that Debbie paid Ross's attacker to carry out the crime. Later on, Swirling accompanies Flanagan when he goes to question Debbie at home but whilst they are there Sarah collapses. She is rushed to hospital and Swirling and Flanagan follow and wait whilst Debbie is updated on Sarah's condition by a Doctor. When Debbie sees the police officers are still there, she angrily confronts them and reveals that she cannot help them with their enquiries due to Sarah's illness. Swirling reveals that he and Flanagan had escorted Sarah to hospital and just wanted to know how she was. Swirling wishes Sarah well and he and Flanagan leave. The following day, Swirling accompanies Flanagan to the hospital when he returns to question Debbie over the acid attack. Faith intercepts them and tells them that Debbie is still worried about Sarah and the officers agree to hold off. They later return and Debbie reluctantly agrees to be questioned. Swirling takes notes whilst Flanagan questions Debbie. She denies any involvement in the acid attack and claims that Sarah made up the allegation as she was angry about Debbie's relationship with Joseph. Swirling and Flanagan leave when they realize that they do not have enough evidence to arrest and charge Debbie.

Swirling appears at the Woolpack and questions Rebecca White (Emily Head) after Lawrence's cars are stolen from a storage facility. Ross gives Rebecca an alibi and Swirling reveals that Rebecca had previously threatened and insulted the manager of the storage facility. Rebecca explains to Swirling that she had been angry that the manager had been going to auction the cars without her consent but Ross tells him that Rebecca would not have known how to drive the car transporter that the vehicles were on. Swirling leaves, telling Ross and Rebecca that he intended to verify their alibi with Ross's brother Pete (Anthony Quinlan). Two days later, Swirling visits the garage and questions Cain about the stolen cars but he denies any involvement. Swirling later visits Mill Cottage after Liv Flaherty (Isobel Steele) accuses Lachlan of trying to kill her and Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) by causing a carbon monoxide gas leak in their home. Swirling takes details from Liv and she is forced to reveal that she had previously sent Lachlan threatening text messages in order to rattle him. Swirling explains that as there is no definitive evidence that the gas leak was caused deliberately, there is no further action he can take. The following day, Swirling questions Lachlan and he denies Liv's accusations, claiming that he had nothing to do with the gas leak.

The following week, Swirling and a colleague appear at the Woolpack when Robert reports Rebecca missing. He tells Swirling that he had found Rebecca's passport in her bedroom at Victoria's house so she could not have left the country to go to Ibiza as had been previously believed. Whilst he is talking to Swirling, Robert receives a voicemail message on his mobile phone from Rebecca, telling him that she is in Wales and is staying in a location with poor mobile phone reception. Swirling accepts that Rebecca is safe and well and leaves with his colleague. Swirling believes that Ross is hiding one of the stolen cars inside the garage and parks outside with a colleague whilst they wait for a search warrant in order to raid the premises. Cain arrives at the garage and spots Swirling's car and warns Ross. Swirling and his colleague then raid the garage. Cain stalls them when he realises that they haven't got the warrant yet. Ross then opens the garage doors and reveals the stolen car. Swirling checks the car's registration number over his radio and discovers that the car is registered to an address in Halifax. Swirling and his colleague leave, not realising that Ross had changed the number plates.

Swirling appears when a farmer called Greg (Greg Snowden) calls the police after discovering Charity, passed out drunk, in one of his fields and she punches him. Swirling drives Charity home and releases her with a caution.

Niamh O'Connor

Niamh O'Connor was the fiancée of Ethan Blake (Liam O'Brien). She appeared in 2004.

After dating for several years, Ethan and Niamh become engaged. However, their different views of the world lead to significant differences between them. Niamh spends some time travelling, and visits Ethan during a break from travelling. When, during her visit, Ethan learns she wants to return to Malawi, they decide to go their separate ways - in spite of their love for each other. Months later, Niamh returns to Emmerdale on a surprise visit. However, Ethan is out of the village at the time visiting friends and he can not be contacted. She leaves the village several days later, missing Ethan, who returns shortly afterwards.

Callum Rennie

Callum Rennie was Home Farm's estate manager. He appeared from 2004 to 2005.

Callum works for Zoe Tate (Leah Bracknell), whom he builds up a friendship with. Callum is devoted to Zoe and eventually confides in her that he is in love with her, although he knows his feelings will never be reciprocated as Zoe is a lesbian. When Zoe leaves the village, he helps her tamper with the gas pipes and timer, and so causes an explosion when the King family, who had conned her out the property, arrive.

Tash Abbott

Natasha "Tash" Abbott is the former fiancée of Simon Meredith (Dale Meeks). She appeared in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Tash and Simon remain friends after their failed engagement.

Dean Morris

Dean Morris was an employee of the King family. He appeared from 2004 to 2007 and in 2009.

Dean first appears in 2004 and works primarily as their chauffeur. He was one of the most loyal and trusted King employees. He takes Carl King (Tom Lister) around Romania following his involvement in the accidental death of Paul Marsden (Matthew Booth), and is forced to lie to Tom (Ken Farrington), which upsets him, as Tom has helped him on numerous occasions. At one point, false rumours suggest he is having an affair with Charity Tate (Emma Atkins); a few weeks later, Tom dumps Charity as he believes she has slept with Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), and as Dean drives him away from the wedding, Tom apologises for doubting him. Following Tom's death on Christmas Day 2006, Dean carries his coffin at the funeral along with Jimmy (Nick Miles), Matthew (Matt Healy) and Carl. In January 2009, he is a pallbearer at Matthew's funeral, and at the wake talks to Lexi Nicholls (Sally Oliver) about his loyalty to the Kings. The following day Dean brings some of Matthew's effects from the site office to Jimmy and Carl. When they see Rosemary Sinclair's (Linda Thorson) name plate from her coffin, Dean reveals to them that Matthew had dug up her body and crushed it in a rubbish truck. In February 2009, he drives a van to Belgium, not knowing Jimmy and Nicola De Souza (Nicola Wheeler) are in the back, having just slept together. The following month he attends Carl and Lexi's wedding. This was Dean's last appearance so far and he has not been seen since.

John McNally

John McNally was a local journalist with the Hotton Courier. He has appeared since 2004.

First appearing in 2004, McNally - as he is normally known - appears whenever there is a newsworthy event in the village. In 2004, he corners Pearl Ladderbanks (Meg Johnson) when her rapist son Frank Bernard Hartbourne (Rob Parry) moves to the village after being released from prison. This sets off a chain of events which lead to the whole village finding out. In early 2005, he covers the disappearance of Shelley Williams (Carolyn Pickles), and her presumed murder by Steph Stokes (Lorraine Chase). When Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) stands for re-election to the local Council, McNally tries to catch him in embarrassing positions, and catches him coming out of a van half-naked with Val Lambert (Charlie Hardwick). He also covers Steph being investigated for the murder of her brother Terence Turner (Nick Brimble) and Tom King's (Ken Farrington) murder. He hires aspiring journalist Jasmine Thomas (Jenna-Louise Coleman) for her village knowledge.

An unpopular man in the village, following Viv Hope's (Deena Payne) imprisonment he hounds her husband Bob (Tony Audenshaw) and writes an article claiming to expose Bob's alleged crime. This causes Bob to have a breakdown and stage a one-man protest outside the newspaper's offices. However, during this protest John is away attending the wedding of his former wife. In November 2008, he covers the new village choir's attempts to enter a competition; and in December, Jasmine demands her article about the local criminal family the McFarlanes is changed to a story about the church but McNally ignores her and prints the story.

McNally makes another appearance in April 2009, when Jasmine's grandfather Sandy (Freddie Jones) asks him to help with a campaign to overturn Jasmine's murder conviction. In spite of their close working relationship, McNally has no sympathy for her, and goes as far as to crack jokes about lesbians in prison before Sandy tells him to get out. McNally is last seen reporting on the local council elections in June 2009 when Eric stands for re-election and his son David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) stands against him. David wins the election and McNally interviews him for his victory speech and gets him and Eric to pose for photographs. He has not appeared since.

Paul Lambert

Frank Bernard Hartbourne

Frank Bernard Hartbourne is the son of Pearl Ladderbanks (Meg Johnson). He appeared in 2004.

Frank Bernard arrives in Emmerdale after being released from prison for raping a neighbour of Pearl's. He was previously accused by a colleague but the case was dropped due to lack of evidence. Many villagers do not take kindly to having a rapist living amongst them, and most either shun or harass him.

When Donna Windsor (Verity Rushworth) has an accident on her scooter, Frank Bernard goes to see if she is all right. Donna panics when she sees him and runs to her brother Scott (Ben Freeman). He and Syd Woolfe (Nathan Gladwell) then attack Frank Bernard, thinking he had harmed Donna and leave him for dead. Frank Bernard is found by Rodney Blackstock (Patrick Mower) and Danny Daggert (Cleveland Campbell), who take him home. He refuses to give the names of his attackers and decides to move to Leeds for his mother's sake.

The scene where Scott and Syd beat up Frank Bernard attracted 27 complaints. However, Ofcom ruled that Emmerdale were not in breach of any broadcasting codes as the scenes were edited in a careful manner.^[2]

Solomon Dingle

Solomon Dingle is Zak Dingle's (Steve Halliwell) cousin. He appeared in 2004.

Solomon serves time in prison alongside Zak's son, Sam (James Hooton). He arrives in the village for the 10th anniversary of the Dingles being in Emmerdale. Zak and Solomon had been rivals for many years and compete for the title "Dingle King", which Solomon wins by cheating. This forces Zak and his family to live in Solomon's caravan. However, Solomon soon abdicates his title to Sam, hoping to drive Zak and Sam apart. However, this did not happen and Solomon leaves the village.

Jon Dingle

Jon Dingle is the youngest child and only daughter of Lilith Dingle (Amanda Hennessy). She appeared in 2004, and from 2006 to 2007.

Jon first visits Emmerdale in October 2004 for a Dingle family celebration to mark their 10th anniversary of living in the village. Her mother Lilith then leaves Jon and her brothers to live with her cousin Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) for a month. Jon returns in 2006 when Lilith leaves her children with Marlon and his wife Donna (Verity Rushworth) while she goes away to work. Days later, Lilith is arrested for armed robbery.

Marlon tells social services that he is having difficulties looking after them, so its agreed that they will go and stay with a foster family. They are soon informed that the children have gone missing and are found in a nearby woodland. The following day, they are taken into foster care. Marlon and Donna desperately try to get the children back but first have to find suitable accommodation. This finally happens when they buy Tall Tree Cottage, and the children move in on 5 July. However, the case against their mother collapses and on 13 July 2007, she takes them to Ireland, much to Donna and Marlon's distress.

Lilith Dingle

Lilith Dingle is the sister of Del Dingle (Hayley Tamaddon). She appeared in 2004, 2006 and 2007.

Lilith first visits Emmerdale in October 2004 for a Dingle family celebration to mark their 10th anniversary of living in the village. To pursue her singing career, she then leaves her four children - named after the Apostles - with her cousin Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) for a month before collecting them on 21 November. Lilith returns on 7 November 2006 when she leaves her four children with Marlon and his wife Donna (Verity Rushworth) while she goes away to work. Days later Lilith is arrested for armed robbery. Shortly after, she is arrested for armed robbery and remanded in police custody. After months on remand, Lilith stands trial on 12 July 2007, and is freed when the case collapses after a prosecution witness collapses after being intimidated by Eli Dingle (Joseph Gilgun). The following day she take her four children to Ireland with her, much to Donna and Marlon's distress.

Luke Dingle

Luke Dingle is the eldest son of Lilith Dingle (Amanda Hennessy). He appeared in 2004, and from 2006 to 2007.

Luke first visits Emmerdale in October 2004 for a Dingle family celebration to mark their 10th anniversary of living in the village. His mother Lilith then leaves Luke and his siblings to live with her cousin Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) for a month. On his first day at Hotten Comprehensive School, Luke gets into a fight with Victoria Sugden (Hannah Midgley) after she makes a remark about his mother being in custody.

Roger Dyson

Roger Dyson is a close friend of Tom King (Ken Farrington). He appeared in 2004.

Roger arrives with his wife Helen, both of whom have been friends with Tom and his late wife Mary for many years. They arrive to visit Tom and his ex fiancée Charity Tate (Emma Atkins) several weeks before the planned wedding. Roger suffers from chest pains, which he does not take very seriously. The day after arriving, he collapses while playing golf with Tom and his sons. He is rushed to hospital but dies. Tom becomes depressed by the death of an old friend.

Helen Dyson

Helen Dyson is a close friend of Tom King (Ken Farrington). She appeared in 2004.

Helen arrives with her husband Roger, both of whom have been friends with Tom and his late wife Mary for many years. They arrive to visit Tom and his ex fiancée Charity Tate (Emma Atkins) several weeks before the planned wedding. Helen sees Charity, much younger than Tom and with little taste for domestic life, as being unworthy of him. While they are cooking a meal together, Charity makes a remark about Helen's food being a heart attack in the making. Soon, they receive a phone call saying that Roger has died of a heart attack while playing golf, causing Helen to lash out at Charity. Helen made her last appearance at Tom's funeral in February 2007.

Enzo Bianchi

Enzo Bianchi was Paul Lambert's (Matthew Bose) boyfriend. He appeared in 2004.

When Paul first arrives in Emmerdale, he frequently mentions his boyfriend of several years, Enzo, with whom he ran a wine bar in Sorrento, Italy. Paul returns to Sorrento in late October 2004 to try and mend their relationship. Shortly after Paul's return, Enzo travels to Emmerdale and tells Paul he wants to end their relationship. Reluctantly, Paul agrees and they finalize who gets what and Enzo returns home.

Gianni Bianchi

Gianni Bianchi was a fake boyfriend for Val Lambert (Charlie Hardwick). He appeared in 2004.

Val alienates her sister, Diane Sugden (Elizabeth Estensen), and son, Paul, (Matthew Bose) before leaving for Italy in September 2004. When she returns in December, she says it is only for a Christmas visit. She brings along her much younger boyfriend, Gianni, and tells everyone that they are getting married but Gianni leaves the next day. Val says he had dumped her because she was too old to have children. However, Paul saw Val give Gianni money before he left and forces Val to admit that she made the whole thing up to get sympathy.
