Francois Jacobus du Toit, a South African, was an Economist, South Africa's Trade Commissioner in London, UK and Chancellor of the Potchefstroom University for Higher Christian Education

Roots

Du Toit was born on 25 Augustus 1897 in Colesberg . He was the son of Francois Jacobus du Toit and Anna Sophia van der Walt.[1] He married Wilhelmina du Plessis. He died on 17 March 1961 in Bangkok, Thailand while on a business trip.

Education

He matriculated from Paarl Gimnasium in 1915 and subsequently obtained BA degrees from the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education and Stellenbosch University. The latter in Economy. [2]

Career

He was a teacher in Schweizer-Reneke, but then moved into journalism. He worked at "Die Weste" newspaper and Die Burger newspaper. Using his background in Economy he became an Agricultural Economist for the government. This was followed by being assistant trade Commissioner in London, UK. After being a senior economist in the Agricultural department , du Toit in 1939 became South Africa’s trade commissioner in London, UK [3] [4]

Chancellor

In 1954 he was appointed as Chancellor of The Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, a position in which he remained until 1961. [5]He fought hard for the expansion of research at the university.[1]

Recognition

  • Honorary doctorate was awarded to him by the Potchefstroom university[1]
  • A Building on Potchefstroom University campus is named after him , it is called the Frans du Toit Building and was opened 18 February 1966.[4]
  • Frans du Toit High school in Phalaborwa,is named after him[6]
  • Frans du Toit- prize awarded by "Die Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns" (an organization that exists out of high qualified academics) for the person who shows the best Business Leadership [7] is named as recognition to him.
