Francisco Antonio de Basavilbaso (1732 – c.1800) was a Spanish nobleman. He held important public positions during the Viceroyalty of Peru, serving as Captain of Militias,[1] Alcalde and Regidor of Buenos Aires.[2]

Biography

Francisco Antonio was baptized on March 31, 1732 in the Buenos Aires Cathedral, son of Domingo de Basavilbaso and María Ignacia de Urtubia.[3] After completing his elementary studies, he made a trip to Europe in the year 1756, getting his law degree possibly at University of Seville. He was also served as intermediary between the Court of Spain and his father, who was Administrator of the Royal Post Office in the Río de la Plata.[4]

In 1768, he served as regidor, being elected alcalde of first vote of the Cabildo de Buenos Aires in 1774.[5] A few years later, Francisco Antonio de Basavilbaso was appointed as Síndico Procurador General (Attorney general) of Buenos Aires.[6] Among his works he was entrusted to establish schools of public education in the parishes of the city.[7] He also had fulfilled functions of Escribano Mayor of Government of the Virreynato of Peru.[8]

Family

Basavilbaso was married to María Aurelia Ross, daughter of Guillermo Ross Munro, born in Scotland and María Antonia Jacinta del Pozo Silva, born in Buenos Aires.[9] They fathered ten children, including José Ramón Basavilbaso.
