Fortunatus Nwachukwu (born 10 May 1960) is the apostolic nuncio to Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Guyana, Saint Lucia, Grenada, Bahamas, Suriname and Belize, Apostolic Delegate to the Antilles, as well as Titular Archbishop of Aquaviva. He had previously served as apostolic nuncio to Nicaragua and, before that, as Head of Protocol at the Secretariat of State.[1]

Nwachukwu was born in Ntigha, Abia State, Nigeria in 1960. After discerning a vocation to the priesthood he studied theology and canon law in the seminary and was ordained a priest for the diocese of Aba on 17 June 1984. He was summoned to the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy where he took courses in diplomacy in Rome. He formally entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on 1 July 1994, and was sent to work in a number of countries including Ghana and Paraguay. After this work he was called to the Second Section of the Secretariat of State in Rome. He is an alumnus of the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Angelicum in Rome where he completed a Doctorate in Canon Law in 1996 with a dissertation entitled "Canons 364 and 365, the Holy See and the State of Israel : (an example of the logic of pontifical diplomacy)."

He was appointed Chief of Protocol on 4 September 2007[2] He speaks a number of languages including English, Italian, German, French, Spanish, in addition to Arabic.

On 12 November 2012 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Titular Archbishop of Aquaviva and at the same time apostolic nuncio to Nicaragua. He was consecrated on 6 January along with Georg Gänswein, Nicolas Thévenin and Angelo Vincenzo Zani by Pope Benedict XVI as consecrator and Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone as well as Zenon Cardinal Grocholewski as co-consecrators.[3]

On 4 November 2017 Pope Francis appointed him apostolic nuncio to Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Guyana, and Apostolic Delegate to the Antilles
