Plot

CSI investigator Sara Sidle is dining alone in a hotel on her birthday, distressed over her divorce from Gil Grissom and estranged from her colleagues. She meets a man, Taylor Wynard, and offers to come up to his hotel room, which he accept. He is subsequently found fatally stabbed there, prompting an investigation by the CSI team. Sara lies by omission, attracting suspicion from the team, but they dutifully follow weak indirect evidence pointing to an elaborate set-up by ex-con Ronald Basderic, a man the team, and Sara in particular, had run-ins with earlier.

A necklace belonging to Sara is discovered in Taylor's room, while she finds the room service knife thought to be the murder weapon in her dishwasher. She calls the CSIs, and tells them she is being set up, as the necklace was a gift from a waitress she helped get a restraining order against Basderic (in "Code Blue Plate Special"). Sara confronts Basderic in a parking garage, but he injures himself and alleges to police that she attacked him. This is partly corroborated by garage's video surveillance, which shows Sara appearing agitated. Basderic successfully gets a restraining order against her.

Sara visits her mother in hospital; she has been transferred from her care home due to alcohol poisoning. She knows of the hotel murder, and tells Sara that Sara killed Wynard the same way she killed Sara's father years ago. Sara learns that Basderic spoke to her mother, panicking and leaving to get her gun. Meanwhile, the team discovers that Basderic entered Sara's hotel room on the night of the crime and called Wynard's room from her phone. He also increased her medication dose to keep her asleep during the murder. They realize that Baseric is not trying to frame Sara, but to incite her to attack him, giving him an excuse to kill her in self-defense.

Nick Stokes and Crawford confront Basderic, but they have to release him. He goes home, finding Sara there. She tries to shoot him, but the gun jams, as Basderic had sabotaged it. He brags about killing Wynard and setting Sara up, but when he tries to fire his own weapon, he discovers that Crawford switched his bullets for blanks. Sara reveals that she recorded his entire confession on tape, and Basderic is arrested. Sara reconciles with the team, overcoming over the gripes caused by her divorce.
