Dr Fondem Neba (born Fontem Aforteka’a Neba) Is a Cameroonian University lecturer, author and an activist who is the Secretary General of the banned Cameroon Anglophone Civil Society Consortium (CACSC),[2] he was the Secretary General of teachers’ trade union of the University of Buea (SYNES) before his arrest on 17 of January, 2017 for staging peaceful protest in the defence of Anglophone Cameroon Common law system of education.[3][4] He is the author of English Language Mastery and Academic Success which was launched on June 18, 2015.[5][6]
Early life and career
Dr Neba Fontem was born Fontem Aforteka’a Neba. Nothing has been published about his early life and his real date of birth. He holds a PhD at University of Ibadan in Nigeria. He is a linguist, lecturer, author and an activist.[7] He is the author of English Language Mastery and Academic Success.[6][8] He was the Secretary General of teachers’ trade union of the University of Buea (SYNES) before his arrest on 17 of January, 2017[3][4] and the Secretary General of the banned Cameroon Anglophone Civil Society Consortium (CACSC).
Arrest
On 17 January 2017, it was reported that Fontem Neba was arrested alongside Barrister Agbor Balla, Ayah Paul Abine in Buea by Cameroon’s police ordered by the government. His arrest came few days after Anglophone Civil Society Consortium (CACSC) which was banned and described it activities illegal in Cameroon.[9][10][11] See details Anglophone problem (Cameroon).
Court charges and trial for Neba
Neba Fondem and Co, were charged with 8 counts by the Cameroon Military tribunals in Yaounde for treason, terrorism, civil unrest, jepardizing the peace and unity of the Republic of Cameroon and if found guilty may face a death penalty.[10][12] On the 23 of March the Neba Fondem trial at the Yaounde military court tribunal was adjourned for another hearing in April 27, May 24[13] and July 27 same year[14] and on the 31 of August through a presidential decree by president Paul Biya. Neba Fondem and friends where released and all charges against them were cancelled.[11][15][16] While in prison, Fontem Neba spoke to the French daily le Jour’s Newspaper during the visit of members of the Social Democratic Front (Cameroon) (SDF) parliament on the 7th April 2017, he said

Negotiations between the Government and the unions of English-speaking teachers had commenced. I must quickly say that the strike had taken another turn and the population followed closely all our actions; And it was no longer possible to circumvent them.[17] | ” |
