Florian-Ayala Fauna is an American artist, musician, poet, and music producer. Fauna is part of the music duo uncertain.

Background

Personal life

At age 5, Fauna moved from the U.S. state Virginia to Bombay Beach, California in Southern California along the rift lake Salton Sea.[1] She credits the place as an inspiration to her music.[2][1] According to Paris-based art community Artchipel, the place had a "big impact on their childhood and becomes a major influence in their life."[2] In an interview with Buffalo, New York alternative newspaper The Public's Cory Perla, they described it as a "post-apocalyptic-looking town."[1]

In 2002, Fauna lived in the exurb community of Indio, California.[3] At age 21, she moved to Buffalo, New York where she has a been part of Buffalo, New York's experimental art and music scene.[4][1] Fauna experiences esoteric visions which is involved in her art and writing due to temporal lobe epilepsy.[1] She has chronic fatigue syndrome and an intersex related condition that plays a role in much of her art.[5] She identifies as an androgyne and as transgender.[3] As of 2017, both Fauna and science fiction author Bruce Sterling are sponsors for V. Vale's RE/Search newsletter.[6][7][8][9][10][11]

Art

Fauna is a multidisciplinary artist whose work has been exhibited at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, France, a Coil-themed exhibition in Berlin, Germany, and in the United Kingdom as well as locally in Buffalo, New York.[12][2][3][13][14] Fauna's artwork utilizes collage, film, painting, photography, and poetry.[3][1] Their work includes imagery of occult, Biblical religious imagery, psychedelia, mental illness, anthropomorphics, chaos and spiritual enlightenment.[4] Animal imagery of deer, foxes, goats, hares, birds, and wolves figures often.[3][15] In an interview with Artchipel, Fauna said their inspiration behind their art were "[t]hings that are sacred, profane, or some combination of the two. Fragility, purity, and decay are important subjects in my work. Nature is also a noteworthy aspect of my work as well."[2]

Music

uncertain

In 2007, uncertain began as the solo project of Florian-Ayala Fauna.[15][5][6][7][8][9] Initially, they made ambient and drone music.[5] It often involved field recordings and tape loops while their current cycle (since 2012) features albums about a family of foxes done with composition, sampling, and complex music production on Ableton Live.[3][1] Influences include Aleister Crowley, Coil, Current 93, and Throbbing Gristle.[5] As of 2016, Fauna is the main producer and collaborates with others, primarily with Felix Keigh who is her fiance and main vocalist.[1]

Live performances

uncertain started doing live performances in 2013 primarily in Buffalo, New York numerous times, except one show at New York City and another in Cincinnati, Ohio. The live performances are called "live ritual aktions" (referencing Vienna Aktionists) and are different from their studio work in that it is of a more visceral nature with leaning towards early Current 93 and recent forms of noise music. Live performances depend a great deal on visuals such as the use of animal masks, candles, lights, video projections, and outfits with elements of ritual robes and shredded decaying material. Outfits have consisted of buried clothing that was eventually dug up, tree branches, found objects, and animal bones and pelts.

Their music is available for streaming on Bandcamp.[1][6][7][8][9][10][11]

Collaborations

Fauna has collaborated with Throbbing Gristle's Peter Christopherson, Esperik Glare's Charlie Martineau (In Serpents and Seas[16]), and former Coil member Stephen Thrower.[3][16] Thrower contributed an opening track to her 2016 album Dark Night of the Soul.[15]

Reception

In February 2013, Orange County, California alternative weekly OC Weekly's Dave Barton called dancing with the blind (lost children) "atmospheric and haunting" and "one of the most evocative titles for an album I've ever heard."[3] In August 2016, The Public's Cory Perla described both their art and music as "otherworldly."[1] In March 2017, British music magazine The Quietus's Russell Cuzner described their music as "somehow fulfil[s] a similar aesthetic to the artist's equally prolific visual art that often depict animal heads [...] as if charged with some kind of hidden power, part gothic horror, part Gnostic totem."[15]
