Fire Force (Japanese: 炎炎ノ消防隊 Hepburn: En'en no Shōbōtai, literally "Blazing Firefighting Corps") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Atsushi Ōkubo. It is published by Kodansha and has been serialized in the Weekly Shōnen Magazine since September 23, 2015, with the chapters collected into fourteen tankōbon volumes as of August 2018.
Plot
Year 198 of the Solar Era in Tokyo, special fire brigades are fighting against a phenomenon called spontaneous human combustion where humans beings are turned into living infernos called "Infernals" (焰ビト Homura Bito). While the Infernals are first generation cases of spontaneous human combustion, later generations possess the ability to manipulate flames while retaining human form. Shinra Kusakabe, a youth who gained the nickname Devil's Footprints for his ability to ignite his feet at will, joins the Special Fire Force Company 8 which composes of other flames users as they work to extinguish any Infernals they encounter. As a faction that is creating Infernals appears, Shira begins to uncover the truth behind a mysterious fire that caused the death of his family twelve years ago.

Special Fire Force
Special Fire Force (特殊消防隊 Tokushu Shōbōtai), also nicknamed Blue Stripes (青線 Aosen), are a fire fighting force that was originally formed by members of The Fire Defense Agency, Tokyo Army and The Holy Sol Temple. All eight brigades investigate the Human Body Ignition Phenomenon and purify Infernals.
Special Fire Force Company 8
Special Fire Force Company 8 (第8特殊消防隊 Dai Hachi Tokushu Shōbōtai) is a Special Fire Force located in Tokyo, having the fewest resources and members since it was formed in a rush compared to the other Special Fire Force Companies. While having the same task as the other branches, Company 8's has an additional mission in the observation of the other companies in case any of them are hiding vital information from the entire organization for personal reasons.
- Shinra Kusakabe (森羅 日下部)
- The main protagonist of the series, Shinra is a Second Class Fire Soldier who joined the Special Fire Force Company 8 to achieve his goal to save people while wanting to learn the truth behind his family's death twelve years ago. As a Third Generation case of Spontaneous Human Combustion, called the Devil's Footprints (悪魔の足跡 Akuma no Ashiato), his Ignition Ability allowed him to augment his leg strength. His ability to further enhanced when using the Adolla Burst, able to move at the speed of light while momentarily dissolving his body, revealing as the Third awaken Pillars that the Evangelist seeks.
- Arthur Boyle (アーサー・ボイル Āsā Boiru)
- A Third Generation with delusions of being a king, enabled by his parents who left to travel the world after their small restaurant burned to the ground. An exceptionally strong Fire Soldier, Arthur's delusion allow him to fabricate and control plasma which he uses in the formation of his sword Excalibur.
- Maki Oze (茉希 尾瀬)
- A Second Generation who was a member of the Tokyo army before joining the Special Fire Force to better help others. While an experienced combatant, Maki uses her Second Generation powers to create living fireballs which also use to power her Iron Owl projectile weapons.
- Iris (アイリス Airisu)
- One of the two surviving nuns of the Holy Sol Temple, Iris joined the Special Fire Force as a medic is one of its non-powered members. She is adamant in her faith and usually gives prayers to dying Infernals as her way of easing their last moments of suffering.
- Akitaru Ōbi (秋樽 桜備)
- Battalion Commander of Company 8, he is a role-model fire-fighter and one of its non-powered members.
- Takehisa Hinawa (武久 火縄)
- Company 8 Commander and a Second Generation who manipulates his flames through the use of his firearms, controlling the power behind his attacks.
- Victor Licht (ヴィクトル・リヒト Vikutoru Rihit)
- Originally Hajima Industries' Head of Incendiary Research before being assigned a position in Company 8 due to a government order, Victor is a mad scientist obsessed with the Adolla Burst. He was also an associate of Joker's.
- Vulcan Joseph (ヴァルカン・ジョゼフ Varukan Jozefu)
- An engineer famously known as the God of Fire and Smithing (炎と鍛冶の神 Honō To Kaji No Kami), he originally nothing to do with the Fire Force due to his history with Dr. Giovanni.
Special Fire Force Company 1
Special Fire Force Company 1 (第1特殊消防隊 Dai Ichi Tokushu Shōbōtai) is an elite group composed mostly of Holy Sol Temple members with jurisdiction in the Shinjuku District.

- Battalion Commander of Company 1. His right eye wearing a blindfold. He saved Shinra and concealed him from what happened 12 years ago.

The Evangelist
The Evangelist (伝導者 Dendōsha) is a mysterious immortal who is leader and overseer of the Knights of the Ashen Flame, gathering eight humans who possess the Adolla Burst to repeat the catastrophic event known as the Great Cataclysm (大災害 Daisaigai).
The Knights of the Ashen Flame
The Knights of the Ashen Flame (灰焔騎士団 Kaien Kishidan), publicly called the White Hoods (白頭巾 Shiro Zukin) are a cult under the guidance of Evangelist, creating artificial Infernals and seeking those with the Adolla Burst to achieve her goals.
- Shō Kusakabe (象 日下部)
- The acting leader of the Knights of the Ashen Flame, Shō is Shinra's younger brother who was assumed to have died as a baby twelve years ago. But in reality, revealed to possess the Adolla Burst as it caused the fire that turned Shinra into a Third Generation, Shō was abducted by the Knights of the Ashen Flame’s leadership and raised by the Evangelist to play a role in the figure's plan.
- Haumea (ハウメア)
- Her exact origins are unknown, Haumea served the Evangelist for most of her life while seeking out others who use the Adolla Burst. She is the second Pillar to appear, her Adolla Burst allowing her to manipulate plasms and control Infernals while having a sixth sense that allows her to be perceptive of what occurs in the Adolla Realm.
- Inka Kasugatani (因果 春日谷)
- An infamous Fire Thief, saving people from fires in exchange for their valuables, Inka awakened her Adolla Burst when she came in contact with contact with Hitohashira Me. Targeted by both groups, Inka ultimately joins the Knights of the Ashen Flame for the excitement. As a Fourth Generation, Inka can smell the pathway of heat and create explosions from it.

- A plague-mask wearing member of the Ashen Flame who infiltrated the Fire Force and became Commander of Special Fire Force Company 3 (第3特殊消防隊 Dai San Tokushu Shōbōtai).

- A member of the Ashen Flame who infiltrated the Fire Force and became a member of Company 3.

- A survivor of the Great Cataclysm, Tempeh ventured to the Tear in Space where he encountered the Evangelist and became an Infernal.

Fire Force is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Atsushi Ōkubo. It began its serialization in the manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Magazine on September 23, 2015. Its individual chapters have been collected into fourteen tankōbon volumes by Kodansha, the first released on February 17, 2016. The series is licensed for English language release in North America by Kodansha USA, which has published the first volume on November 8, 2016.
