Fantasea II: The Second Wave is the upcoming second studio album by American rapper Azealia Banks, as well as the sequel to her debut mixtape Fantasea.[1] It was set to be released by 2018.[2] Following an incident regarding Banks' appearance on American television show Wild 'n Out, she cancelled the album on July 16, 2018.[3] However, in an interview with Rolling Stone on August 28, Banks confirmed that the album will be released.[4]

Background

After the release of Fantasea, Banks expressed interest in releasing a follow-up mixtape.[5] An earlier version of the song "Count Contessa" was released in September 2013 in anticipation for a July 2014 release of Fantasea II.[6] Though originally conceived as a mixtape, Banks confirmed it will be a full-length studio album in a 2017 interview with XXL magazine. On June 26, 2017, Banks released the second promotional single for the album, "Escapades".[7] "Escapades" was released to iTunes on September 1, 2017, and was officially announced as the first single from the album, before being replaced by "Anna Wintour". On March 2, 2018, "Movin' On Up" (featuring Newbody) was released to SoundCloud.[8]

Singles

On January 29, 2018, Banks took to her Instagram to discuss the promotion of the album. She confirmed that the lead single from the album would be "Anna Wintour" produced by Junior Sanchez and, initially, featuring Mel B from The Spice Girls.[9] It was later confirmed via Banks' Instagram page that Mel B would be removed from the track due to personal issues. Banks announced on Instagram on March 27, 2018, that Anna Wintour will be released April 6.[10] The song was officially premiered on Ebro Darden's Beats 1 radio show, on April 5, 2018. It peaked at number 24 on 'Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

On July 6, 2018, Azealia released "Treasure Island" as the album's second single.[11]

Promotional singles and other songs

During the start of the album's recording, Banks released "Count Contessa" on September 16, 2013. On December 8, 2015, Banks released the music video for the song. Following that, during her feud with Lady Gaga, Banks also released "Venus" on July 13, 2013; in response to Gaga's song with the same title.

On June 5, 2017, Banks released the song "Chi Chi" on her CheapyXostore page and later on streaming services.[12]

The song, "Escapades", was released to SoundCloud later on on June 26, 2017. It was later re-released on September 1, 2017, as the first promotional single from the album. The accompanying music video was released on October 30, 2017. The video contains Banks dancing in front of a white background while posing and dancing on a turntable.[13] On March 1, 2018, Banks released the song "Movin' On Up" to Tidal and Amazon Music before taking the song down due to the wrong version being uploaded. The final version was released on iTunes on March 9, 2018.[14]

Following the album's cancellation, Banks released the song "Pyrex Princess" on August 25, 2018, indicating the album may still be in development.[15]

In July 2018, Banks left the set of American television show Wild 'n Out crying and later accused the cast of allegedly using colorist jokes against her. Following the incident, she cancelled the album on July 16, 2018 by posting on her Instagram story, "Album is cancelled. I need some time to relax and bounce on dick. I'll release new music when I feel like it."[3][16]

The Wild 'n Out episode featuring Banks aired in August 2018, and showed DC Young Fly saying "My boy Nick Cannon is so petty... he couldn't get Cardi B so he got Azealia's ugly ass". Banks took the mic to say "that was very anti-black" and asked for "no colorism".

On August 28, Banks confirmed that the album would be released.[4]
