Food and beverage service

The airport has a restaurant and lounge, named Kathryn's. The restaurant serves basic American fare and is traditionally open for breakfasts and lunches Monday through Saturday. At other times, souvenirs, sundries and basic food are available at Kathryn's Snack Shack pre-security screening. Mornings from 5 to 8 am, Kathryn's Snack Shack only operates post-security on the second level of the airport with coffee, beverages and basic sundries.

The airport has struggled to maintain a restaurant operator in the past. The restaurant has previously been "Dolores' Place" operated by local restaurant critic Dolores Casella,^[6] "Das Kinder Haus" which served German food, and "Runway 21" (1991-1995) which tried to be an upscale steak house and coffee shop.^[7] The restaurant has been remodeled once in 1991 and a small fire broke out in 2008 while the restaurant was closed.^[8]

Airline service history

• Western Airlines and its predecessor Western Air Express served Idaho Falls from the mid 1930s until 1987 when Western was acquired by and merged into Delta Air Lines. ^[11][12] Aircraft operated by Western over the years into Idaho Falls included Boeing 247, Douglas DC-3, Convair 240 and Douglas DC-6B prop aircraft as well as Lockheed L-188 Electra turboprops followed by Boeing 727-200, Boeing 737-200 and Boeing 737-300 jets.^[13][14] In 1976, Western was operating direct, no change of plane Boeing 737-200 jet service into Idaho Falls from Calgary, Great Falls, Helena, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco in addition to non-stop 737 flights from Butte, Pocatello, Salt Lake City and West Yellowstone.^[15] By 1981, Western was operating daily Boeing 727-200 one stop service direct to both Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO) with both flights operating via Salt Lake City (SLC).^[16] Following its merger with Western, Delta continued to operate mainline jet service into Idaho Falls and in 1989 was operating three daily nonstop flights to Salt Lake City with Boeing 737-200 and 737-300 jets.^[17] By 1994, Delta was continuing to operate three daily nonstop flights to Salt Lake City with Boeing 727-200 and 737-300 jets.^[18]
• West Coast Airlines served Idaho Falls with Douglas DC-3 prop aircraft followed by Fairchild F-27 turboprops from the mid 1950s until 1968 when it merged with Bonanza Air Lines and Pacific Air Lines to form Air West which in turn was subsequently renamed Hughes Airwest.^[19] Air West was serving Idaho Falls with Fairchild F-27 turboprops in 1968 and this F-27 service was being continued by Hughes Airwest in 1972.^[20][21] By the mid 1970s, Hughes Airwest was operating all of its service into Idaho Falls with Douglas DC-9-10 and McDonnell Douglas DC-9-30 jets with direct, no change of plane flights to San Francisco (SFO) and Seattle (SEA) as well as non-stop jet service to Boise and Salt Lake City.^[22] By 1979, Hughes Airwest had added non-stop DC-9-30 jet service between the airport and Denver (DEN).^[23]
• In 1979, four airlines were serving Idaho Falls: Hughes Airwest and Western were operating jet service while commuter air carriers Gem State Airlines and Mountain West Airlines-Idaho were also operating flights, Gem State with Convair 580 and Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner turboprops, and Mountain West with Embraer EMB-110 Bandeirante commuter turboprops and Piper Navajo prop aircraft.^[24]
• Cascade Airways served Idaho Falls from 1980 to 1985, first with Embraer EMB-110 Bandeirante commuter turboprops and later with Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner commuter propjets as well as with larger Hawker Siddeley HS 748 turboprops.^[25] Cascade then introduced jet service and in 1985 was operating British Aircraft Corporation BAC One-Eleven jets on direct, no change of plane flights to Boise (BOI), Portland (PDX) and Seattle (SEA) via a stop at Pocatello.^[26]
• Frontier Airlines started service June 12, 2014 between Idaho Falls and Denver^[27] but due to changing business conditions decided to cancel service effective January 5, 2015.^[28]
• Horizon Air was serving Idaho Falls in 1985 with Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner commuter propjet service non-stop to Boise and had added flights operated with de Havilland Canada DHC-8 Dash 8 turboprops by 1989.^[29][30] In 1995, Horizon Air was serving Idaho Falls with Dash 8 turboprops and Fokker F28 Fellowship twin jets on behalf of Alaska Airlines via a code sharing agreement with the non-stop flight F28 jet flight to Boise also operating continuing daily one stop service to Oakland (OAK).^[31] The regional airline began operating non-stop service between Idaho Falls and Seattle on behalf of Alaska Airlines in 2003 with their largest propjet airliner, the Bombardier Q400 which can transport 76 passengers,^[32] but discontinued the service in 2004.^[33] It reinstated non-stop flights to Seattle beginning on October 25, 2008. The flights included a stopover in Bozeman, Montana. This service was discontinued as of August 23, 2009.^[34][35] On June 16, 2010, Horizon Air announced its intention to once again discontinue all service to Idaho Falls effective August 22, 2010. At the time, the airline was flying between Idaho Falls and Boise.^[36]
• United Express operated by SkyWest Airlines via a code sharing agreement with United Airlines added service to Denver June 8, 2006.^[37] The nonstop service to Denver is currently operated with Canadair CRJ-200 regional jets.^[38]
• Allegiant Airlines added twice weekly McDonnell Douglas MD-80 jet service to Las Vegas (LAS) in November 2005.
• Northwest Airlines started service between Idaho Falls and Minneapolis-St. Paul June 9, 2005. Service was discontinued after Northwest merged with Delta Air Lines.^[39] Seasonal service operated by Delta with first-class and coach cabins resumed in June 2014.^[40]
• SeaPort Airlines offered service between Boise and Idaho Falls starting in July 2011 after Horizon Air discontinued service. Due to issues providing maintenance on their aircraft and due to aircraft changes, the airline stopped service on December 31, 2011. The flight time increased from 1 hour to 1.5 hours.^[41][42][43]
• Big Sky Airlines started service between Idaho Falls and Denver in October 2002. Citing lack of demand, the airline discontinued service to Denver January 13, 2003.^[44]
• Delta Air Lines discontinued mainline jet service to Salt Lake City in October 1998.^[45] In 1995, Delta was operating three daily nonstop flights to Salt Lake City with Boeing 737-300 jets while Delta Connection operated by SkyWest Airlines via a code sharing agreement was operating four daily nonstops to Salt Lake City with Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia commuter propjets.^[46] All Delta service into Idaho Falls is currently flown by SkyWest operating as the Delta Connection with Canadair CRJ-200, Canadair CRJ-900 and Embraer 175 regional jets with the CRJ-900 and E175 offering first-class and coach cabins.^[47]
• American Airlines discontinued mainline McDonnell Douglas MD-80 jet service to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) in 1994. The service had started in December 1987.^[48] In 1989, American was operating daily direct one stop MD-80 jet service into Idaho Falls from both Dallas/Fort Worth and Chicago O'Hare Airport with both flights making an intermediate stop in Salt Lake City.^[49]
• Following its acquisition of and merger with Hughes Airwest in 1980, Republic Airlines (1979-1986) served Idaho Falls until September 1982. This service dated back to the West Coast Airlines era (see above). During the early 1980s, Republic was serving the airport with McDonnell Douglas DC-9-30 jets with non-stop flights to Boise and Denver as well as direct service to Seattle.^[50][51] After the airline decided to cancel service to the airport, two carriers expressed interest to airport manager Jim Thorsen. Horizon Air then started serving Idaho Falls in 1983 with Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner commuter propjets.^[52]
