"Falling Down" is a posthumously released collaborative song by late American rappers Lil Peep and XXXTentacion. It was released on September 19, 2018. The song is Peep's third posthumous single as the lead artist, following his collaborations "Spotlight" (with Marshmello) and "4 Gold Chains" (featuring Clams Casino), released in January and May of the same year, respectively. The song is XXXTentacion's third posthumous single as the lead artist, following "Ghostbusters" with Trippie Redd and "Moonlight", released in June and August. As of October 2018, the single has peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Lil Peep's highest-charting single in the United States.

Background

"Falling Down" was originally recorded as "Sunlight on Your Skin" during a London studio session between iLoveMakonnen and Lil Peep as part of a collaboration project.[1] The producer claimed the lyrics "Let's watch the rain while it's falling down" was described that at the time Lil Peep recorded the song, it was pouring outside. In November 2017, Lil Peep died from an accidental Fentanyl–Xanax overdose, leaving the project unfinished.[2] The song was played on livestream by iLoveMakonnen following his death and then was uploaded to YouTube as a snippet, where XXXTentacion heard it.[3] XXXTentacion contacted iLoveMakonnen and recorded a verse over Makonnen's in tribute of Lil Peep, the rapper is quoted as saying that if he had seen the better side of Peep before he died then they would have been good friends.[4] XXXTentacion died on June 18, 2018 from a gunshot wound, leaving the verse to be one of the last he ever recorded.

Release and promotion

On August 18, 2018, iLoveMakonnen announced the collaboration between Lil Peep and XXXTentacion alongside Peep's producer Smokeasac,[5] claiming it was coming on August 19, 2018.[6] He added that the song is a reworking of "Sunlight on Your Skin", a song co-written and recorded by Makonnen and Peep in 2017, prior to his death. The new version features verses by XXXTentacion that he recorded after Lil Peep's death to pay tribute to Peep.[6]

The song was released on September 19, 2018 after a long delay, being announced by Lil Peep's and XXXTentacion's mothers.[7][8] XXXTentacion's mother, Cleopatra Bernard, uploaded the preview on Instagram, captioning it with "From Peep's mom and I" with Makonnen confirming it was the mothers' wishes.[1][9]
