Fátima prayers

The Fátima prayers (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈfatimɐ]) are five Catholic prayers that originate from the Marian apparitions at Fátima, Portugal, in 1917. The Decade Prayer, as the best known of these five prayers, is commonly added at the end of each decade of the Dominican Rosary, one of the most popular devotional practices in Roman Catholicism. Another two other prayers are also associated with the visions and may be classed as Fátima Prayers. However, they did not come to existence in Fátima but in Spain many years later. This brings the number of prayers to seven.

Cova da Iria

Angel of Peace

Theological Prayer

In the Spring of 1916, an angel taught the children of Fatima this prayer, repeating it three times:[1]

My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love You. I ask pardon for all those who do not believe in You, do not adore You, do not hope in You, and do not love You.

The angel then said, "Pray in this way. The hearts of Jesus and Mary are ready to listen to you." To believe, hope, adore, and love God is to practice the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity.[2]

Offering Prayer

In the summer of 1916, the same angel told the children to make spiritual sacrifices:[3]

In every way you can offer sacrifice to God in reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and in supplication for sinners...Above all, bear and accept with patience the sufferings God will send you.

The angel explained "In this way you will bring peace to our country, for I am its guardian angel, the Angel of Portugal."

Trinitarian Prayer

In August of 1916, the angel taught the children this prayer, also repeating it three times:[4]

Most Holy Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - I adore You profoundly, and I offer You the Most Precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences by which He is offended. And by the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg the conversion of poor sinners.

Sacrilege against the Eucharist includes receiving it in mortal sin.[5]

Eucharistic Prayer

That same day, the angel gave the children the Eucharist and told them that Jesus was outraged by the ingratitude of men:[6]

Offer reparation for their sakes and console God.

"Their sakes" refers to the men ungrateful to the Lord, not to the children in particular.

Our Lady of Fatima

First Offering Prayer

On May 13, 1917, Our Lady asked the children to:[7]

[O]ffer yourselves to God...and bear all the sufferings He sends you...[i]n atonement for all the sins that offend Him...[a]nd for the conversion of sinners

When the children agreed, Our Lady said "then you will have a great deal to suffer, but the grace of God will be with you and will strengthen you."

Trinitarian Prayer

That same day, when Our Lady bathed the children in light, the children prayed:[8]

Oh, Holy Trinity, we adore You.

Eucharistic Prayer

The second half of the above prayer goes as follows:[9]

My God, my God, I love You in the Blessed Sacrament.

It is not the Trinity, but Jesus, who is in the Eucharist.[10]

Rosary Decade Prayer

On June 13, 1917, Our Lady taught the children to pray after each decade of the Rosary:[11][12]

O my Jesus, pardon us, save us from the fire of hell. Take all holy souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.

Our Lady encouraged the children to continue to pray the Rosary.

Second Offering Prayer

On July 13, 1917, Our Lady taught the children to pray when making a spiritual sacrifice:[13]

O Jesus, this is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for offenses committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

After that, Our Lady revealed the three secrets of Fatima.

Tuy Chapel

These prayers were allegedly taught by Jesus to Sister Lucia in 1931. The alleged revelations of Christ have not been approved by the Church; only the angelic and Marian apparitions of Fatima are approved.[14]

Conversion Prayer

By thy pure and Immaculate Conception, O Mary, obtain the conversion of Russia, Spain, Portugal, Europe and the whole world![15]

Salvation Prayer

Sweet Heart of Mary, be the salvation of Russia, Spain, Portugal, Europe and the whole world.[16]
