"Everybody Everybody" is a song by the Italian music group Black Box featuring singer Martha Wash. It was the third single from their debut album Dreamland (1990), and was released in March 1990 in most countries worldwide.

"Everybody, Everybody" was a success on many charts, including the US Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at number eight. In 2010 the song was named the 171st best track of the 1990s by Pitchfork Media.[3]

Critical reception

Billboard wrote about the song: "U.K. house act wears disco-era influences on its sleeves once again on a tasty jam that will make you hanker for those good old Studio 54 days. Love those horn and string fills."[4]

Chart performances

The song was a hit on several charts, particularly on the Hot Dance Club Play in the United States, where it reached #1 for three consecutive weeks from July 21 to August 4, 1990. The song also peaked at #2 on the U.S. R&B Chart, #8 on Billboard Hot 100, #16 on the UK Singles Chart,[5] and achieved a great success in Ireland (#6).

The song features an uncredited Martha Wash on lead vocals, as initially she requested Black Box not to mention or credit her name in the recording. In a 1990 settlement with RCA Records, Wash was guaranteed proper credit in recordings. As was customary in their music videos, live performances and album cover art, Katrin Quinol, a French model, was featured lip-synching the lyrics sung by Wash.

Uses in the media and remixes

The song was featured in the 1991 film Cool as Ice.

The vocal chorus hook "Everybody Everybody" was used in the D Mob single, "One Day" in 1994.

Eurodance and electronic music DJ and producer Benny Benassi remixed "Everybody Everybody" in 2007.

The song was featured on "Play It Again, Brian," the tenth episode of the sixth season of Family Guy. The episode was originally broadcast on March 2, 2008. In the episode, Peter Griffin laments that his friend Cleveland Brown is unavailable for babysitting services because he is touring with Black Box. A clip is then shown of a rather portly, singlet-clad Brown performing "Everybody Everybody."

In 2016, the song was featured in the final episode of the FX series The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story during O.J. Simpson's celebration party after his acquittal.

In 2017, the song was featured as the official theme song of the prestigious Closest to the Hole (CTTH) Tournament in Dallas, TX. Played on repeat, the song is used to hype up the crowd and maintain a level of energy from start to finish. Director of Game Day Operations, Blake Gantz, chose the song and faced harsh criticism for many months, but has since prevailed.

Impact and legacy

The Village Voice listed "Everybody Everybody" number 55 in their list of "Top Singles Of The 90's" in 1999.

BuzzFeed listed the song number 14 in their "The 101 Greatest Dance Songs of the '90s" list in 2017.[6]
