Eva van Marle

Portrait of a woman, signed "EM.F.", dated 1648, and decorated with the Holt family shield, in the regent's room of the Vrouwenhuis

Eva van Marle was possibly a Dutch Golden Age painter active in Overijssel. Eva van Marle would have worked as a portrait painter in Zwolle around 1650.[1]

Biography

According to the RKD she was possibly the teacher of Hendrick ten Oever.[2] She signed her works with the monogram EM.F. and her oldest known work is a portrait of a goldsmith, who was the brother-in-law of Gerard ter Borch the Elder, dated 1645.[3] Most of her portraits depicted people to their waist. All of her works, except two portraits, depict people from the patriciate and nobility of Overijissel, and from Zwolle.[4] Six portraits by her hand hang in the Vrouwenhuis, Zwolle, but little else is known of her.[2] Her works consist only of portraits dated from 1642 to 1654.[5]

Controversies

There is no genealogical data present for Eva van Marle in the Zwolle magesterial family Van Marle.[6] There is research, but no hard evidence, suggesting that Eva van Marle referred to a monogram of the painted Evert Meertman. Evert Meertman was also believed to be the same person as Ever(ardt)t Moerman(s), who was married in Zwolle in 1634, and gained citizenship in 1639. They were claimed to be buried in Zwolle in April 1659.[7]

Attribution

Recent research is doubtful about the existence of Eva van Marle, and questions the (19th century) attributions.[8][9]
