Esther Simpson

Esther Simpson (31 July 1903 – 1996) was appointed assistant secretary for the Academic Assistance Council in 1933. It became the Society for the Protection of Science and Learning in 1936, and is now known as the Council for At-Risk Academics.

She was born Esther Sinovitch, in Leeds of Lithuanian Jewish parents. She attended Leeds Girls' Modern School and, from 1921 to 1925, the University of Leeds. From 1927 to 1933 she worked for the International Fellowship of Reconciliation, first in London and then in Vienna. From 1944 to 1966 she was assistant secretary at the Society for Visiting Scientists.

She was awarded the OBE in 1956 and an honorary degree by the university in 1989.[1]
