Ervin Zukanović (Bosnian pronunciation: [ěrʋin zukâːnoʋitɕ]; born 11 February 1987) is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a centre back for Serie A club Genoa and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

Club career

Early career

Prior to joining Serie A, Zukanović played for Željezničar, Austria Lustenau reserves, Velež, Sulzberg, Kortrijk and Gent, among others.[2]

Chievo

On 20 June 2014 he was signed by Chievo on a temporary deal, with an option to buy.[3] He picked his year of birth as his shirt number.[4] On 11 June 2015 Chievo exercised the option to sign him outright for a reported €1 million.[5]

Sampdoria

On 15 July 2015 Zukanović joined Sampdoria for a transfer fee of €3 million plus the registration rights of Fabrizio Cacciatore, after long negotiations, when it was thought that he would go to Inter.[6] Upon arriving for his medical, he stated that Sampdoria was always his first choice, stating: “Inter wanted me, but I decided it was best for my future to come to Sampdoria.”[7][8][9]

Roma

On 29 January 2016, he completed his move to Roma, on loan until the end of the season for initial €1.2 million, and buy option set at €2.8 million.[10] He debuted for the Roman club the next day, providing an assist in a 3–1 win against Frosinone.[11] One month later, Roma exercised their buy option, signing Zukanović permanently.[12] Playing for Roma, he made his first UEFA Champions League appearance, losing 0–2 to Real Madrid.[13]

Atalanta

On 21 July 2016, it was confirmed that Zukanović would join Atalanta on a season-long loan until 30 June 2017.[14] He debuted on 21 August 2016, the opening day of the league.[15]

Genoa

On 11 July 2017, Zukanović signed on loan with Genoa, with an obligation to buy after certain conditions are met.[16] He debuted on 17 September in a home 2–3 loss to Lazio, and provided an assist for one of the goals.[17]

In June 2018, Genoa exercised their buy option and Zukanović signed a three-year contract.[18]

International career

Zukanović was first called-up for Bosnia and Herzegovina in key 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Greece and Lithuania.[19] He debuted on 16 October 2012 in a comfortable victory over Lithuania.[20]

He was also selected to Bosnia and Herzegovina's preliminary squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He failed to join the team, which had a training camp in the United States, due to visa problems.[21] However, Zukanović later blamed the Bosnian FA, which subsequently got him dropped from the squad.[22]

After the firing of Safet Sušić, Zukanović was re-selected by new coach Mehmed Baždarević in March 2015. He made his return in a UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying match against Andorra.[23]

Personal life

After the outbreak of Bosnian War, he moved with his parents to Germany via Slovenia.[24]

Zukanović and his wife Emina have two children, boy named Armin and a girl named Alin.[25] He possesses Belgian passport since 2015.[26]
