Controversies

In August 2010 German state owned TV ARD reported of having information that the Europa league match between clubs Olimpija and Široki Brijeg is fixed, which was later reported by numerous media across Europe.[3][4][5][6] Asian and European betting companies were the first to report their suspicion of the match being fixed after several people deposited a total of 4 million euros that Široki would win shortly before the start of the match. It was later revealed that UEFA is investigating the match and that three players of Olimpija Ljubljana are under investigation.[7] One of them was Ermin Rakovič, who later publicly denied his involvement.[8] The implications came only a year after UEFA revealed that NK Interblock, a club where Rakovič played at the time, was under similar investigation for their Europa league match one season earlier.[9]

In late April, 2011, Slovenian police investigated an illegal betting organization and have taken four persons into custody.[10] In the days after it was reported that several present and former Slovenian football players are allegedly involved and one of which is said to be Ermin Rakovič.[11] After continuous claims that he was never involved in the illegal betting organization and that he has never placed any bets, Raković finally changed his statement in January 2012 stating that he was not aware that the organization where he placed his bets (a total of €724.000) was illegal.[12] His statements came in light of new evidence in the case of the illegal betting organization and indictments against six individuals by the general prosecutor on the District Court in Maribor, Slovenia.[13]
