Equal Suffrage League of Virginia

The Equal Suffrage League of Virginia was an organization created in 1909 with the goal of achieving equal voting rights for women in the U.S. state of Virginia. It had close parallels in many other U.S. states. In 1920, with the new 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution allowing women to vote in all states, the Equal Suffrage League reorganized and became the Virginia League of Women Voters, associated with the national League of Women Voters.

There were 18 original founders. Lila Meade Valentine was the first president.[1] Kate Waller Barrett was Vice President. Adele Goodman Clark served as the secretary for one year, as a committee chair, and as head of the group's lobby in the Virginia General Assembly.[2]

Other cofounders included Nora Houston, Ellen Glasgow, and Mary Johnston.[3]
