Emily Hsiu-Ching Chang (born August 11, 1980) is an American journalist, who is currently a Bloomberg TV anchor based in San Francisco. Chang hosts Bloomberg Technology, a daily show focused on technology and the future of business.[3][4] She is the author of Brotopia: Breaking Up the Boys’ Club of Silicon Valley, published in February, 2018.

She was a CNN correspondent based in Beijing, China from 2008 to 2010, prior to which she reported from CNN's London bureau. Before joining CNN, she was an award-winning reporter for KNSD in San Diego and KHON-TV in Honolulu. She is also a LinkedIn Influencer and a member of the Lean In Community.[5] On June 30, 2014, she launched a new interview series on Bloomberg Television, Studio 1.0.

Early life

Chang was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to Laban Lee Bun Chang (1951-2003), a lawyer born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and Sandra Galeone Chang, a former teacher at Punahou School in Honolulu and currently at The Nueva School in Hillsborough, California.[2] Chang grew up in Kailua, Hawaii, and graduated from the Punahou School in 1998.

Education

In 2002, Chang graduated from Harvard University with a B.A magna cum laude in Social Studies.[6]

Early career

During her time in China, Chang reported on prominent stories including the 2008 Beijing Olympics, China's economic transformation and its environmental consequences, the 2008 floods of South China, the aftermath of the Sichuan earthquake, North Korea's nuclear ambitions and President Obama's historic visit to Asia. During Obama's visit to Shanghai, Chang was briefly detained by the police for her coverage of the banned Oba-mao T-shirt, which depicted the American President dressed in iconic Red Army attire.[7][8] In London, Chang covered European and international events including the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. She had a one-on-one interview with Benazir Bhutto, former prime minister of Pakistan, weeks before her assassination.

Bloomberg Technology

She left CNN and joined Bloomberg TV on Sept. 25, 2010.[9] Bloomberg West debuted on February 28, 2011,[10] as the only network or cable TV show to be based in San Francisco.[11] The daily show features original reporting and interviews with tech newsmakers including venture capitalists, CEOs, start-up entrepreneurs, and analysts.[12] The show was renamed Bloomberg Technology, beginning October 5, 2016.[4]

She has interviewed some of tech's biggest names including Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt,[13] Twitter CEO Dick Costolo,[14] LinkedIn Co-founder and Executive Chairman Reid Hoffman,[15] Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma, and others. In January 2013, Chang interviewed Silicon Valley legend Tom Perkins, formerly of venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers, in a 45-minute interview.[16] Perkins appeared on the show to clarify his controversial opinions put forth in a Wall Street Journal op-ed where he compared the war on the 1% in America to the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany the day before.[17] Chang asked Perkins if he thought he was "divorced from reality", and whether he regretted the comparison. During the interview, "Tom Perkins" became the top trending term on Twitter.[18]

Studio 1.0

On her new series launched in June 2014, Studio 1.0, she has interviewed leading tech and media influencers including Andreessen Horowitz co-founder Marc Andreessen, best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, tech investor and entrepreneur Peter Thiel, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Awards

Chang was named one of the top 100 influential tech people on Twitter by Business Insider in April 2014.[19] She was also ranked 10th on the 100 most influential tech women on Twitter by Business Insider in May 2014.[20] In 2011, she was named one of San Francisco's "Hot 20 2011" by 7x7 magazine.[21] While reporting for KNSD in San Diego, Chang won five Emmy Awards for her coverage of topics including drug smuggling across the US-Mexico border.[22]

Personal life

On July 4, 2010, Chang married Jonathan Stull in Haleiwa, Hawaii.[1] Chang gave birth to a son, Cooper Judson Stull, on September 8, 2012 and to a second son, Ramsey James Stull, on January 5, 2015.[23] In December 2016, she announced their third child was expected in January 2017.
