Information
Gender Female

Emily the Stirling Engine is a fictional anthropomorphic steam locomotive from the television series Thomas & Friends. She was the second female steam engine (Lady was the first female steam engine), first female steam engine to be featured in the television series (Daisy was the first female diesel engine and female engine) and first female tender engine, and became a member of the "Steam Team", as the eight core characters of the series which she became in Series 8, and appeared in lots of episodes more often. She was also the only female in the Steam Team, up until the addition of Nia and Rebecca in Series 22. She is painted dark emerald green and has two large driving wheels and a shiny brass safety valve cover.

She first appeared in the Series 7 episode "Emily's New Coaches".

When she first arrived on the Island of Sodor, she took Thomas's coaches Annie and Clarabel by mistake, much to Thomas' dismay. However, after she rescued Thomas and Oliver from an accident, Thomas forgave her and The Fat Controller (Sir Topham Hatt) rewarded her with two coaches of her own. Emily acts as a sisterly figure to the other engines. She is very kind and friendly and always sensitive to the other engines' feelings. If she wrongs someone, knowingly or not, she is quick to apologize.

Emily is the first member of the Steam Team who does not appear in The Railway Series—the series of books that have formed the basis of the television series, and she is also the first member in the Steam Team who was not created by the Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry and his son, Christopher. As well as this, she is the first Steam Team member who did not make their first appearance in the first series. She speaks with a Scottish accent in the U.K. narration of the series, while in the U.S. narration, she speaks with an American accent.

In the more recent (CGI) stories, from Hero of the Rails onwards, Emily is voiced by Jules de Jongh (U.S.) and Teresa Gallagher (U.K.).

In the Series 19 episode, "Diesel's Ghostly Christmas", Emily is seen pretending to be "E-Marley's Ghost" as part of Thomas' successful plan to get Diesel to change his ways during Christmas.

Prototype

Emily is based on a Stirling 4-2-2 of the Great Northern Railway. These locomotives were used on high-speed express services from York to London in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Great Northern Railway used an apple green livery on their locomotives unlike that carried by Emily.

Whilst the Stirling 4-2-2 is a tender engine, Emily is incorrectly described as a tank engine in some of the Thomas & Friends books.[1]
