Emilio Gutiérrez (born c. 1963) is a US-based Mexican journalist. He formerly worked for El Diario de el Noreste. After reporting on allegations about the Mexican Army and receiving death threats, Gutiérrez fled to the United States with his son in 2008.[1]
In December 2017, Gutiérrez's request for asylum was denied,[2] which is, according to Gutiérrez, almost a death sentence for him.[3] Organisations like the Reporters Without Borders, the National Press Club and the Society of Professional Journalists complain vehemently against the court's decision.[1] Gutiérrez was sent to a detention facility in Sierra Blanca, Texas during his appeal.[4] He was later released hours before a deadline which a judge had ordered ICE reveal it documents related to the matter.[5]ww.nj.com/opinion/index.ssf/2018/08/under_trump_ice_jailed_a_journalist_who_criticized.html
Gutiérrez was awarded the John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award by the National Press Club on December 18, 2017, "on behalf of Mexico’s besieged journalists."[4] The ceremony was held remotely, by video conference.[4]
