Emelyn Thatcher Whiton (née Leonard, later Righter, March 1, 1916 – March 1, 1962) was an American sailor who competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics.
She was born in New York City and was the wife of Herman Whiton. They married in 1939 and were divorced in 1957. She died in the plane crash of American Airlines Flight 1 in Jamaica Bay.
In 1952 she won the gold medal as crew member of the American boat Llanoria in the 6 metre class event.[1] She was only the sixth woman in history, and first American woman, to medal in Olympic sailing, but she was the only member of the crew who did not actually receive a medal.[2] Separate women's sailing events were not added to the Olympics until 1988.
