Elisheba

Elisheba, also spelled Elisheva (/əˈlɪʃɪbə/; אֱלִישֶׁבַע‬ ’Ělîšeḇa‘), was the wife of Aaron, the older brother of Moses and the ancestor of the Jewish high priests, according to the Hebrew Bible.[1] She is said to be a daughter of Amminadab, and a sister of Nahshon, from the Tribe of Judah (Exodus 6:23).[2]

In Hebrew names, Eli means "my God"[3] and Sheba means "oath", so Eli-sheba is oath of my God or "(My) God is an oath".[4] The name's first part can be compared to what Jesus is believed to have said on the cross in the Gospel according to Matthew 27:46: "Eli Eli lama sabachthani?" which is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?".[5]

In the New Testament, in first chapter of the Gospel according to Luke, a woman named Elisabet (Greek: Ἐλισάβετ[6]) is said to be a descendant of Aaron and the wife of Zechariah, who was also a priest. She was allegedly a relative of Mary, mother of Jesus and gave birth to John the Baptist.[7] Elizabeth is the common modern English variant of Elisabet, derived from Elisheba.[8] A notable example is Queen Elizabeth II.

Alishba is a modern South Asian name that derives from Elisheba.[8] An example is the Pakistani actress Alishba Yousuf.
