Eduard Goldstücker

Professor Eduard Goldstücker (1913-2000)[1] was a Czechoslovak literary scholar and prominent figure in the Prague Spring of 1968.

Biography

Goldstücker was born into prosperous Jewish family in a small town called Podbiel in Slovakia. Goldstücker joined the Czechoslovak Communist party in the 1930s. He first studied in Prague, before having to flee in 1938/9. He took up a place at the University of Oxford, where he completed his studies. Following his time at Oxford he joined the Czechoslovak government-in-exile. Later to be appointed to the Czechoslovak diplomatic service, where he spent time in Paris and London. He subsequently became the first Czechoslovak ambassador to Israel at the beginning of the 1948 and continuing into the 1950s. he became a lecturer in German literature at Charles University in Prague.
