Edin Cocalić (Bosnian pronunciation: [ědin tsǒtsalitɕ]; born 5 December 1987) is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a centre back for Belgian First Division B club Mechelen and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

Club career

Cocalić began his football career with Željezničar, where he spent eleven years.[2] He was also the youngest captain in club's history at the time, serving as captain in his last three seasons.[3] His highlight moment was scoring a second goal in a city derby against Sarajevo in a cup match, helping his team to a 3–1 win and eventually advancing to semi-finals.[4]

Cocalić signed a contract with Panionios in January 2010 after failing to agree terms of new contract with Željezničar.[5]

In January 2012, Cocalić was transferred to Israeli club Maccabi Haifa on a deal until June 2015.[6]

Mechelen

On 31 January 2015, Cocalić joined Belgian side Mechelen, signing a contract until June 2018.[7] He debuted seven days later in a league game against Charleroi that ended in a goalless draw.[8] Cocalić scored his first goal for the club on 5 April against Waasland-Beveren.[9]

He put pen to paper on a new contract expiring June 2020 in January 2017.[10]

Despite Mechelen's relegation in March 2018, Cocalić decided to stay at the club and prolonged his contract until 2022.[11]

International career

Cocalić was the captain of Bosnia and Herzegovina under-17 and also a part of under-19 and under-21 teams.[12]

He received first senior call-up in March 2015,[13] and debuted later that month in a convincing triumph over Andorra.[14]

Personal life

Edin and his wife Merima have two children.[15]
