East Institute of Puebla (Instituto Oriente de Puebla) originated with a school opened by the Jesuits in Puebla, Mexico, in 1870. It has grown to accept students from preschool through college prep.

Chronology

  • 1870 – Catholic College of the Sacred Heart of Jesus opened by Jesuits at #4 E. 2nd Street, Puebla, the beginning of East Institute.
  • 1908 – Move to S. 11th & W. 13th.
  • 1914 – Triumph of Constitutionalists: College, occupied by revolutionary troops during the revolution, closes its doors. Brother José Jurado, SJ, continues teaching grades one through six in the homes, under the name "Uncle Pepe".
  • 1921 – Return to campus on S. 11th.
  • 1924 – Modern campus purchased at Jardines de San Manuel; San Felipe de Jesus sports club founded.
  • 1938 – Founding of magazine Forja; adoption of slogan Militia est vita.
  • 1950 – Primary school fitted with bus to collect students.
  • 1962 – Construction begins at San Manuel.
  • 1973 – Baccalaureate offered, including evening classes.
  • 1976 – Saturday classes introduced for those wishing to complete high school.
  • 1979 – Father General of the Jesuits Pedro Arrupe visits the school while in Puebla for the Latin American Episcopal Conference.
  • 1980 – Library building opens, named after Francisco Xavier Alegre, SJ.
  • 1993 – Retreat house opens.
  • 2000 – Auditorium opens, named after Gonzalo Carrasco, SJ.
  • 2005 – Language Center inaugurated in conjunction with the Universidad Iberoamericana; also primary section gets a new building.
  • 2007 – Preschool opens in its own building.

Recent programs include "School for Parents", "Tutorial Accompaniment", educational and administrative councils, commitment to an ecological culture with synthetic turf on football fields, and adding a 300-car parking lot.[1]

Sports

Sports facilities include a fitness center, swimming pool, football fields, running track, Rama football, basketball, volleyball, and rugby.[2][3] The Institute participates in the Interjesuit games, an athletic contest between the Jesuit high schools in Mexico, at the primary[4] and high school levels.[5] The fencing coach Jose Manuel Rascon has made a mark in national and international foil in the person of Alix Lerch whom he coached.[6]
