Dylan DeMelo (born May 1, 1993) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. He is currently playing with the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League (NHL). DeMelo was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the 6th round (179th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
Playing career
DeMelo played four seasons (2009–13) of major junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), scoring 25 goals and 100 assists for 125 points, while earning 220 penalty minutes in 218 OHL games played.
On April 20, 2012, DeMelo was signed by the San Jose Sharks of the NHL to an entry-level contract.[1] He made his NHL debut for the Sharks on October 17, 2015 in a game against the New York Islanders.[2] He scored his first NHL goal as a San Jose Shark on January 26, 2016 in a 6–1 win over the Colorado Avalanche.[3]
After completing his second full season with San Jose in the 2017–18 campaign, DeMelo as an impending restricted free agent, was initially not tendered an qualifying offer by the Sharks on June 25, 2018.[4] Despite being exposed to free agency, DeMelo opted to re-sign with the Sharks to a two-year contract on July 7, 2018.[5]
He was traded to the Ottawa Senators on September 13, 2018, along with Rudolfs Balcers, Chris Tierney, Josh Norris and a conditional 2019 and 2020 draft pick, in exchange for their captain Erik Karlsson.[6]
