Duck Game is an action game developed by Landon Podbielski and published by Adult Swim Games. The game was released for the Ouya in 2014, and for Microsoft Windows in 2015. A PlayStation 4 version was released in August 2017,[1] and while a Nintendo Switch version is also scheduled, a release date has yet to be announced.[2][3]

Gameplay

Duck Game is a 2D action video game that features shooting and platforming mechanics. The game has a single-player arcade mode where the user can complete challenges to get tickets, which can be used to unlock more in-game hats as well as modifiers to change up the game (such as Moon gravity) as well as local or online multiplayer with up to three other players.[4][5] The game has a simple premise, one hit and you are dead, last player standing wins the round, play to some target number of rounds (default is 10).[6][7] The game features a simple control scheme; the thumbstick or directional buttons are used to move the player's duck. Beyond moving the duck character there are five buttons used, two to interact with weapons; one to pick up/throw a weapon, another to use the weapon you are holding, another to strafe (walk backwards) and two others; Quack and Trip/Ragdoll. The complexity in the game comes from the large assortment of weapons, and the varied environments players find.[5]

The game has several unique elements, including multiple hats, a quack button, and a ragdoll button.[5][8]

Development

Duck Game was developed by Vancouver-based developer Landon Podbielski. The game was released for the Ouya on May 13, 2014.[9] On launch, the game only featured a multiplayer mode, however in November 2014, single-player modes were added.[10] The game was released for Microsoft Windows on June 4, 2015.[5] At the 2015 PlayStation Experience, a PlayStation 4 version of the game was announced,[3] with its release following on August 22, 2017.[1]

Duck Game received generally positive reviews from critics. The game received an average Metacritic score of 82 based on six reviews.[12] Critics cite the multiplayer as driving the games appeal.[5][13] Reviewers likened the game to other successful 2D brawlers, including Super Smash Bros., TowerFall, and Samurai Gunn.[5][8]

Sean Flint was critical of the name choice, saying "it describes absolutely nothing about it other than the fact that it may contain ducks".[7] Several reviewers have complained about the inconsistent level design, and lack of an engaging single player experience.[6][7]
