Drafting dog

A Full Grown Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

A drafting dog or draft dog is a dog bred and used for cart pulling. Dogs bred for this work have strong builds. All drafting dogs have the qualities that are needed, strength and determination. Draft Dogs are in the Molosser breed group which are dogs that are solidly-built, strong dogs some Molossers are medium and others are large. Larger mountain dogs pulled larger carts. While smaller ones pulled smaller carts[1]

Examples

These dogs are some of the working dogs known for drafting work. Like the four Swiss mountain dogs, they were used for pulling carts. The size of the cart matched the size of the dog.

Draft dog appearance

Large draft dogs like the Bernese Mountain Dog and Greater Swiss Mountain Dog are known for their large size. But all four Swiss Mountain Dogs are known for their coat color tricolor the combination of black white and brown. The smallest of the four Swiss Mountain Dogs is the Entlebucher Mountain Dog usually weighing between 20 and 30 kg (44 and 66 lb). Next up in size is the Appenzeller Mountain Dog weighing between 22 and 32 kg (49 and 71 lb). The second largest is the Bernese Mountain Dog the female weight is usually 36–48 kg (79–106 lb) while the male weight is usually 39–50 kg (86–110 lb). The Largest is the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. Female Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are usually between 50 and 60 kg (110 and 130 lb). Males are usually between 60 and 70 kg (130 and 150 lb). The St Bernard's appearance is similar to the Moscow Watchdogs appearance. The two breeds come in the White & Red Color. While the original St Bernard was short haired today there are no long haired varieties. The long coat was a result of breeding the Saint Bernard of breeding them with the Newfoundland. The reason for that breeding was that Saint Bernard's had a disease that could not be cured and were in danger of dying out completely. They were then cross bred with the Newfoundland which did not have the affection. The result gave the St. Bernard a long coat gene as well as the Black and Mahogany colors.

Temperament

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Bernese Mountain Dog, and Rottweiler have personalities that are closely matched. They were watchdogs so the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog and Rottweiler are cautious with strangers yet if socialized with them the dog will like them better. All dog breeds need early socialization and training. All breeds can be gentle and stable if trained and socialized properly. Bernese Mountain Dogs were likely watchdogs. They are not aggressive. The Bernese Mountain Dog tends to be gentle and friendly. The St Bernard is gentle and loves people. However, like all dog breeds, Bernard's need early socialization and training to avoid issues. These dogs are not the best for the novice dog owner.
