Dominick Reyes (born December 26, 1989) is an American mixed martial artist. He competes in the light heavyweight[5] division and is currently signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Reyes is known to be extremely flexible and acrobatic. As of October 8, 2018, he is ranked #6 in the official UFC light heavyweight rankings.[6]

Background

Reyes was born in Hesperia, California, California, United States.[2] Reyes has always been an athlete where he had a wrestling background and played football when he was young, and dreamt of playing in the NFL. After graduating from Hesperia High School, he moved to New York to attend Stony Brook University, where he earned his B.S. in Information Systems[7] while playing defensive back for the Seawolves, eventually becoming captain. He twice made the All-Conference team. Reyes participated in the NFL Draft Combine where three of the NFL teams, Washington Redskins, San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders, expressed interested in him; however, he was not drafted by either.[7]

After not being drafted, he returned home to California and channeled his energy to focus on MMA training at his brother's gym, Combat Cage Academy,[4] and started competing in amateur MMA fights shortly after.[8][4]

He works as an IT technical support for a high school and fights professionally under the UFC banner.[4]

Mixed martial arts career

Early career

Before signing with the UFC, Reyes amassed an amateur record of 5-0 and was twice the U of MMA champion[9] during his amateur career.[10]

Reyes also amassed a professional record of 6-0 including a victory that went viral on the internet against Jordan Powell who seemed to be showboating before being knocked out with a kick.[11][12][13]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Reyes made his promotional debut for the UFC on June 25, 2017 against Joachim Christensen at UFC Fight Night 112.[14][15] He won the bout via technical knockout in the opening minute of the fight,[16] and he earned the Performance of the Night bonus.[17]

Reyes faced Jeremy Kimball on December 2, 2017 at UFC 218.[18] Reyes won the fight via submission in the first round.[19]

Reyes faced Jared Cannonier on May 19, 2018 at UFC Fight Night 129.[20] He won the fight via TKO in the first round.[21]

Reyes faced Ovince Saint Preux on October 6, 2018 at UFC 229.[22] He dominated the fight and won by KO due to a counter left hand, which dropped Saint Preux to the ground and Reyes walked off as it was a KO win, the win was originally title a unanimous decision win but later was overruled to a knockout. [23]

Personal life

Reyes' nickname "Devastator" is because of his devastating kicks.[8] He is a fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Dodgers and he enjoys snow boarding, wake boarding, mountain bike riding, dirt bike riding and watching documentary shows on TV.[4]
