Development

On April 4, 2016, The Dark Tower producer Akiva Goldsman announced that he would write the script to adapt the novel Doctor Sleep, to a film adaptation. On December 29, 2016, Ouija: Origin of Evil director Mike Flanagan said he has an interest to adapt the novel.

On January 26, 2018, it was announced that an adaptation of Doctor Sleep was fast-tracked into development at Warner Bros. with Flanagan set to direct, who had previously directed another one of King's adaptations, Gerald's Game for Netflix, with Trevor Macy and Jon Berg producing the film and King serving as executive producer and creative consultant.[1]

Casting

In June 2018, Ewan McGregor, taking over the role originated by Danny Lloyd in the original film, and Rebecca Ferguson joined the cast.[2][3] In August 2018, it was announced that Carl Lumbly (taking over the role originated by Scatman Crothers in the original film), Alex Essoe (taking over the role originated by Shelley Duvall in the original film), Zahn McClarnon, and Kyliegh Curran had joined the cast.[4][5][6] McClarnon was cast following a breakout role as Akecheta, the Native American "host", in the second season of Westworld.[5] Curran won her role over 800 other girls, having "impress[ed] the filmmakers with her knack for authenticity."[6] In September 2018, Bruce Greenwood and Emily Alyn Lind were cast.[7][8] In October 2018, Jocelin Donahue joined the cast.[9]

Filming

Principal production began in September 2018, in Atlanta, Georgia.[10][11]

Release

The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on January 24, 2020 by Warner Bros. Pictures.[12]
