Dinesh Kaushik (born 13 April 1960) is an independent politician, and current Member of Legislative Assembly in Haryana, India. Kaushik was born in Karnal and completed his initial schooling in the city due to his father being posted in the police services in Karnal. After his father retired, Kaushik moved to Fatehpur. He represents Pundri constituency in the Haryana Legislative Assembly.[1]

Career

Author and academic D. C. Verma, in his book Haryana, highlights Kaushik's mobilizing efforts in Karnal since the late 80s.[2] It is noted that Kaushik actively campaigned and organized for more than a decade in the area without stepping into electoral politics. Karnal, historically, was a bastion of the Brahmin caste which Kaushik belongs to and it seemed to people that we would be the next parliamentarian from the constituency.[3] In the 1996 elections and 2000 elections, Bansi Lal and Om Prakash Chautala were keen on inducting Kaushik in their individual parties, but he declined at the time.[4] He ultimately decided to run from Pundri.

The Pundri constituency in Haryana has consistently elected independent MLAs since 1996.[5] Kaushik won it as such a candidate in the 2005 state assembly elections[6] Kaushik was among nine former independent MLAs from the state who joined the Indian National Congress party after those elections.[7] Kaushik won the 2014 Assembly campaign, again as an independent candidate something that has not happened post 1996.[5] Soon after being elected in 2014, Kaushik indicated his support for Manohar Lal Khattar, the BJP leader who became Chief Minister following the elections.[8] He is a member of the Library Committee and the Committee on Local Bodies and Panchayati Raj.[9] In January 2016, Kaushik was trusted with the responsibility of being the focal point to draw investments to the state of Haryana from China and Japan by the CM.[10] In the past few years, Kaushik has been able to work with the government to provide developmental funds for Pundri and the surrounding areas.[11]

Personal life

Kaushik is also the chairman of the BPR Educational Institutions.[12]

Along with his wife, he leads the KDS Excavation & Mining Private Limited that operates and has mines all over the Yamuna river in Haryana.[13]

Kaushik is married to Sandhya Kaushik and has two sons.[1]
