Diante do Trono (IPA: [djɐ̃.tɨ du tɾonu]; lit.: Before the Throne) is a Brazilian contemporary Christian music band formed in 1997 in the city of Belo Horizonte, in the Lagoinha Church. It is led by singer, songwriter and pastor Ana Paula Valadão.[1] The group became popular in Brazil since the release of their first album in 1998: Diante do Trono. However, it was from the Águas Purificadoras and Preciso de Ti albums that it acquired international recognition, becoming the largest worship ministry in Latin America and one of the world's three largest ministries of praise, worship and mission.[2][3]

In a presentation, held on 10 July 2003, during the recording of the album, Quero Me Apaixonar, Diante do Trono gathered about 2,000,000 people at Campo de Marte Airport, in São Paulo, being the largest public of a Christian event already registered in the world, and the second largest public of Brazil, losing only to the festival Rock'In Rio.[4] The band won the Talento and Promissas trophies, and was nominated for the Latin Grammy in 2012 for Sol da Justiça.[5] The group has sold over 15,000,000 albums, one of the record holders for music sales in Brazil.[6][7]

From its inception, the band had brass and string sections. It has had several instrumental changes throughout its career, especially the period of the years 2011 and 2012, when the only members that remained from the initial group were Ana Paula Valadão, vocalist and band leader, and Elias Fernandes, rhythm guitarist. The band's sound became noticeably more pop rock with the removal of its brass and strings ections, and is characterized by congregational singing, with influences of pop rock, progressive rock and folk.[8]

The group also created the Ministerial Training Center Diante do Trono (CTMDT), a preparatory center for musicians and singers in the area of missions, as well as the Arts Factory, which is a partnership with Lagoinha Church, to train professionals in various areas such as singing, theater and dance, as well as having part of children's music division. Diante do Trono participates in social projects, such as India Project, which collects and helps Indian girls in prostitution, food donations to cities in the North of Minas Gerais in 2003, and a campaign of bone marrow donations in Barretos, during the recording of their thirteenth album in 2010.[9]

History

1997–2000: The beginning

In 1997, the pastor Márcio Valadão, father of Ana Paula, and Sérgio Gomes, teacher of Church, decided to make a record, whose income would serve to combat child prostitution they saw on a trip to India. The material for the album was recorded on 31 January 1998. Along with Ana Paula, the vocals were formed by singers like André Valadão, her brother, and Nívea Soares. A few months after recording the musical work was released, highlighting the song "Diante do Trono". With the positive repercussion and impact of the song, the group, which until then had no official name, was named Diante do Trono. Other songs from this album gained popularity on the radio, especially "Aclame ao Senhor", "Deus de Amor" and "Manancial".[10]

With the commercial success of the first work, the group started recording their second album, Exaltado, in February 1999. It was produced by Ana Paula, Sérgio Gomes and André Espíndola, and had participation of vocalists of the first work, like Nívea Soares, and new members Helena Tannure and João Lúcio Tannure.[11][12][13]

2000–2003: Expansion

They began performing throughout Brazil and band's popularity grew among evangelicals. Águas Purificadoras was released in 2000. produced by Sérgio Gomes, it was recorde in Gameleira Park, Belo Horizonte, where the group gathered about 70,000. Graziela Santos and Mariana Valadão joined the band.[13][14] The 1st International Conference of Praise & Worship Diante do Trono was also held in 2000. In collaboration with Hosanna! Music, the group recorded two album: Aclame ao Senhor, the Portuguese version of Shout to the Lord, and Shalom Jerusalém, composed of songs with a Jewish rhythm with the participation of singer and American worship leader Paul Wilbur.[13][15]

In 2001, the group released Preciso de Ti. It was recorded on 14 July 2001 at the Mineirão Stadium in Belo Horizonte, with attendance of 210,000 in the bleachers and the field,[16][17] which is the highest public attendance for the stadium.[13][18] The work sold 400,000 copies in its first week of release and has since reached the milestone of 2,000,000 copies, the best-selling Christian album in Brazil. In addition to commercial success, the band won the Talento Trophy in 2002 in the Best Music and Best Group categories.[19]

In order to intercede for the country, the first of the Brasil Diante do Trono collection was record on the night of 1 December 2001, at the Maracanã Stadium, in Rio de Janeiro. Once again, it surpassed a record with more than 180,000 attendeees in the stadium.[20] The first album in the Crianças Diante do Trono children's music collection was released.[21][22]

The fifth album of Brasil Diante do Trono collection, Nos Braços do Pai, was recorded in July 2002 at the Ministries Esplanade, in Brasília, Federal District, with 1,200,000 from all over Brazil in attendance.[23][24] They band began to perform in other countries, doing shows in Guatemala and Japan, and releasing the English and Spanish versions of the work Nos Braços do Pai.[25]

In 2003, Nívea Soares recorded her first solo album, Reina Sobre Mim.[24][26] On 12 July 2003, the group recorded their sixth album and the third of the Brasil Diante do Trono collection: Quero Me Apaixonar.[27] The recording took place at Campo de Marte Airport, in the north of São Paulo, 2,000,000 in attendance. The band collected 35 tons of food, later distributed in the North of Minas Gerais.[28] In that year's Talento Trophy, the group took two of three nominations.[24][29]

2003–2006: After 2003

Soon after the recording of Quero Me Apaixonar, in São Paulo, the band went through a period of internal change.[28] After this, their seventh work, Esperança, was recorded at the Administrative Center of Bahia, in Salvador, on 10 July 2004, bringing together about one million two hundred thousand people, according to data from the Military Police of Bahia.[30][31][32] The band won seven of eight nominations for the Talento Trophy.[24][33] In 2004, André Valadão released her first solo album: Mais Que Abundante.[34][35]

They recorded Ainda Existe Uma Cruz in 2005 in Porto Alegre, on the shores of Guaíba Lake, with 300,000 in attendance.[36][37][38] In the same year also occurred the definitive exit of Maximiliano Moraes.[39] During the Talento Trophy, the group won in three categories.

Alegria, a solo work by André Valadão, and Por Amor de Ti, Oh Brasil, were recorded live at the Yamada Arena, in Belém during the group's annual conference in 2006.[40][41] Also released was Sem Palavras, the group's first instrumental album.[42] The group won mostly in the Talento Trophy categories of children's albums.[43]

2007–2010: Celebrations and new cycles

In March 2007 the band recorded Tempo de Festa, a special double DVD and CD commemorating 10 years of career at Via Funchal, which presents the theme songs for each of the group's nine albums including "Manancial", "Tempo de Festa" and previously unreleased "Amado Salvador", composed by the band leader especially for this work.[44] According to reviewers, the weak point of the event was the lack of innovation.[45] At that year's International Conference of Praise & Worship, they recorded a second commorative CD and DVD, this time celebrating 10 years of Com Intensidade containing only the group's happy songs.[46][47] In July, shortly before the release of Tempo de Festa, the group recorded its tenth album, Príncipe da Paz, at Apoteose Square, in Rio de Janeiro, with an audience of more than 100,000. In one of the moments of the DVD, Ana Paula Valadão prophesies against the carnival and intercedes for the keys of Rio de Janeiro.[48] The work clomplted the Brasil Diante do Trono collection, with recordings in all regions of Brazil.[49][50] In the Talento Trophy happened the same as in the previous year: the set won mostly in the children's categories.[51]

In May, the group was honored in the Raul Gil Program where the story of the band was told. Other musicians from the Christian world, such as David Quinlan, Marina de Oliveira, Aline Barros, Trazendo a Arca and Adhemar de Campos paid homage to the band.[52][53]

In Recife, on the nights of the 4 and 5 July 2008 at Chevrolet Hall, they recorded A Canção do Amor, which marked the beginning of a new cycle for the group.[54][55]

In the 2009 they announced a partnership between the group and the Som Livre label.[56] A collection of the group's songs was sold on newsstands in Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte in February 2009,[57] and at a presentation in Manaus, Ana Paula Valadão announced that the city would host the recording of the group's twelfth album. However, as there was no release of the venue in a timely manner, the band recorded Tua Visão in Belo Horizonte's Station Square on 1 August, and featured guest appearances by Fernanda Brum, Nívea Soares, Mariana Valadão and Felippe Valadão.[58] According to reviewers, the work confirmed the need for a musical renewal.[59] The March for Jesus in Belo Horizonte, held on 14 November, featured a performance of Diante do Trono alongside Renascer Praise.[60]

2010–2012: Musical renewals

Before the recording of the thirteenth album Aleluia, in the city of Barretos, the band created a dedicated website.[61] On the day of the recording, the band partnered in a bone marrow donation campaign with Cancer Hospital of Barretos. The album was the last that relied on the group's old formation, after which, the brass and string sections, and some vocalists officially left.[62] It was the best-selling Christian work of the year in Brazil.[63] After the album was released, the group performed for the first time on a TV show on Rede Globo, the Domingão do Faustão. Attendance raised the program audience on that date.

During the 12th International Conference of Praise & Worship Diante do Trono in 2011, Glória a Deus, a Portuguese version of Gateway Worship's, God Be Praised, was recorded before 6,000. Several changes were announced during the conference. The older instrumentalists and vocalists announced their new albums. In addition, the "orchestra" would also cease to be part of the band.[64] A few months later, the group recorded Sol da Justiça in Meio Beach, in the city of Natal.[65][66] However, the poor climatic conditions of the place disturbed the recordings, thus making the event to be held again at the Riachuelo Theater. In just one day of release the album sold more than fifty thousand copies.[67] The song "Me Ama" was one of the most performed on Christian radio stations and in churches all over Brazil.

On 4 February 2011, the Nos Bastidores com o DT program debuted in Rede Super. The program showed the band's backstage activities, giving viewers the opportunity to follow the group's travels and ministry.[68][69]

During the ceremony of the Promessas Trophy in 2011, the group was the most awarded, winning in the categories Best Praise Ministry and Best DVD.[70] On 10 December, the group were in Rio de Janeiro to participate in the Promessas Festival, an event organized by Rede Globo, which brought together eight other singers: Davi Sacer, Fernanda Brum, Fernandinho, Damares, Pregador Luo, Ludmila Ferber, Regis Danese and Eyshila.[71][72][73]

2012–2014: 15 years and celebrations

In 2012, during the recording of Creio

On 9 June 2012, the band recorded its fifteenth recording, an unpublished album, celebrating fifteen years of the group. Creio was recorded in Manaus, and had an audience of 350,000 in the Manaus Sambadrome. The album was directed by Alex Passos, who chose to do a different job than is done in most audio-visual projects. The event also brought special guest appearances by Ludmila Ferber, Thomas Miller, Mariana Valadão, Felippe Valadão among other musicians. The project confirmed a possible route back to Christian music mainstream, receiving an audience of more than 300,000, which had not happened for many years.[9][74][75] The work received positive reviews[76] and audience acclaim, selling 50,000 copies in just one day.[77][78] The DVD of the same work went to platinum in fifteen days.[79] Still, in 2012 they released a fifteen-year-long commemorative special site, containing testimonials, stories, photos, polls, among other special material. Created by Quartel Design, the project brought a design with mosaics that resemble the band's recordings and photos.[80] They also recorded Suomi Valtaistuimen Edessä, an international project in Finnish, re-recording the albums Aleluia and Sol da Justiça[81] and also the participation in the project Hillsong Global Project, recording the Portuguese version of the project in partnership with Hillsong Music Australia.[82] Released by the label CanZion Brasil, it sold forty thousand copies, reaching the gold disk status.[83]

In 2013, vocalist Ana Nóbrega signed a contract with the Som Livre label to release his second solo work, Nada Temerei, being the first since their entry into Diante do Trono. The disc received contributions from band members in the production, arrangements and recording, but the musical style of the work was distinguished from Diante do Trono. The songs were signed by the artist in collaboration with vocalist Israel Salazar, who also contributed the arrangements. It was released in February.[84]

In celebration of the 15 years of ministry, the band recorded during the 14th Conference of Praise and Worship, "Renovo", which is a re-reading of the oldest songs that marked the history of the group in new arrangements was recorded.[85][86][87] In May of that year, the band was featured on Billboard Brasil with the songs "Creio", "Canta Minh'alma" and "Me Ama". In the same month, Ana Paula Valadão announced the departure of several vocalists. In addition to Ana Nóbrega, who had previously left for a solo career, the couple Rodrigo and Saara Campos went to Finland, Guilherme Fares, Sebastião Batista and Roberta Izabel left the group.[88]

On 6 July 2013, the vocalist Ana Paula Valadão announced the recording of Tu Reinas in the Sertão, as a social initiative. The project, recorded in Juazeiro do Norte, had an audience of about 30,000 in the Padre Cícero Event Park. In addition to the main gathering, the group toured the interior of the Sertão, where other recordings were made. The work contains performances of some of the band's previous works and three previously unreleased tracks. The album had special participation of André Valadão, Mariana Valadão and Juliano Son and the direction of Alex Passos.[89][90][91] At the same time, the band released a custom clothing shop, "DT Wear", containing books, accessories, footwear and clothing with messages of songs of Diante do Trono.[92]

2014–present: From Brazil to the nations

In 2014, the band was prepared to record their seventeenth album, Tetelestai, and their first live recording outside of Brazil.[93][94] In May, the group left for Israel, with about 382. On 13 May, the recording took place in the Tower of David in Jerusalem, with 557 attendees.[95] On 15 May the recordings took place in the Garden of the Empty Tomb and the Mount of Olives.[96] The project had the special participation of André Valadão, Asaph Borba, Rosana Borba and Ana Lúcia Câmara, André Borba, son of Asaph Borba and Isaque Valadão, son of Ana Paula Valadão, who played violin this project, directed by Alex Passos. In June 2015, the band released Tetelestai, and held a pre-release album tour of several cities in Brazil.[97][98][99] During the pre-release of the project, Ana Paula Valadão participated in the Ratinho's Program, SBT, on 8 July.[100] After the recording period of the album, the band performed an international tour through Europe, passing through Portugal, England, Belgium, Germany, Finland and France,[101] when passing through Finland, the band released their second album in Finnish by the project Nations Before the Throne, Läpimurto, with songs, recorded in Finish, from Creio, Renovo and Tu Reinas. A chorus of about 100 sang in front of the stairs of the Finnish parliament.[102][103] In August, Deus Reina, the second album in partnership with Gateway Worship was recorded during the 1st Gateway Diante do Trono Conference at Lagoinha Church.[104][105]

Due to the release of the album Tu Reinas only occurred in 2014, Tetelestai's release schedule was delayed, the latter being released in June 2015. To commemorate the great achievement of the project recorded live in Israel, the band performed a pre-release tour of the album. The tour toured several cities in Brazil. During the pre-launch of the project, Ana Paula Valadão held an afternoon of autographs at the Saraiva bookstore at Shopping Center Norte in São Paulo and participated in the Ratinho Program at SBT on July 8, where the singer released the work and sang some songs. In September 2015, Pra Semper Teu, the third album in partnership with the American worship ministry Gateway Worship, was recorded live in Lagoinha Church. In the same year, Israel Salazar and Marine Friesen released their first solo albums entitled "Jesus" and "Alfa & Ômega", respectively. 2015 marked the official entrance of Gustavo Bessa, the husband of Ana Paula Valadão, in the executive direction of Diante do Trono, and at the end of that year Ana Paula and Gustavo, along with their sons Isaque and Benjamim, returned to live in the United States, where Ana Paula became a pastor of worship at Gateway Church. In the same year, the band signed with the record label Onimusic for the publicity and distribution of all its audiovisual works.

The following year, Muralhas was recorded in partnership with Gateway Church. It was recorded live at the Biblical Church of Peace in São Paulo.[106] At the end of 2016, the group recorded the first album of the soaking series, Imersão, all with 21 spontaneous songs or moments as defined by the ministry leader. During the 2017 Conference of Worship, Intercession and Mission, the group recorded the second volume of this series, Imersão 2, with Nívea Soares and Israel Salazar.[107]

After many years of preparation, the band performed the recording of their second album outside Brazil. The visual album Deserto de Revelação was recorded in July 2017 during a trip to Jordan and Israel in the Wadi Rum, Jerash, Petra, Little Petra, Sea of Galilee, among other. This was the first work focused only on digital media, first launched using YouTube and streaming media, later on physical media, but without a DVD release. The album received a mixed reception by critics, with a positive highlight for the song "Amor Que Me Abraça".[108] The response from the public on the streaming and digital download platforms was positive.[109]

Crianças Diante do Trono

The Crianças Diante do Trono project began from a desire of the band to take their songs in a language directed to children, with the use of animated characters and children of Lagoinha Church.[110]

The first disc geared to children, 2001'2 Crianças Diante do Trono, contains the song "Aos Olhos do Pai". After the good reception of the work Amigo de Deus, Quem é Jesus?, Vamos Compartilhar, A Arca de Noé, Samuel, o Menino que Ouviu Deus, Amigos do Perdão, Davi, Renovo Kids and DT Babies were released.[111] Para Adorar ao Senhor (Live),[21][112] Through the albums, the group won several Talento Trophies.[51][113]

Discography

Discography of Diante do Trono consists of live albums, infant albums and studio albums.[114] The works produced have brought several awards.[70] Were cities in all regions of Brazil that received the recordings of the band.[28][115]

Musical style and influences

Ana Paula Valadão, the lead singer and band leader

Since the first album, the group showed roots of congregational singing in instrumental part.[118] The band's orchestra was a feature that marked the group since the first album, making heavy and dense metal sound the main musical feature of the Diante do Trono.[119] The end of this brought the renewal of the arrangements of the set from the album Sol da Justiça, which has since influenced pop rock.[120]

The main musical references of the Diante do Trono are the Christian sets Gateway Worship and Hillsong. The band even recorded several albums in partnership with ministries. The Diante do Trono also translated songs from Jesus Culture, among other groups of praise and worship.[121][122][123]

Recognition

Throughout its career, the Diante do Trono brand achieved remarkable for a Christian music band: it was the only Brazilian Christian ensemble to receive tribute in a television program;[52] has performed for more than two million people at a concert in the city of São Paulo;[27] besides being the only band participating in Promessas Festival.[73] The group has already toured Switzerland,[124] Finland,[125] United States, Asia, among other places.[126]

Specialist criticism considers that the whole is diversified in its compositions, with deep lyrics, poetry, words that bring repentance, among other subjects.[48]

The Diante do Trono has already participated in several television programs, especially the Programa Raul Gil,[127] Eliana,[128] Domingão do Faustão,[129] Caldeirão do Huck,[130] Encontro com Fátima Bernardes,[131] Altas Horas,[132] Programa do Ratinho and many other Television news in several states. In 2012 Ana Paula Valadão was placed in the election for being the only Christian singer on the list O Maior Brasileiro de Todos os Tempos (The Brazilian Biggest of All Time). In July 2013, the leader Ana Paula Valadão met with President Dilma Rousseff along with other worship leaders to pray for Brazil.[133] Dilma Rousseff to visit the Lagoinha Baptist Church in Mulheres Diante do Trono (Women Before the Throne) in September, but by a scheduling conflict this was not possible, perhaps in the near cult this will be possible.[134] In September 2013, Ana Paula Valadão part of the frame "Crianças Curiosas" in Raul Gil Program and soon after, he received an invitation to attend the Teleton 2013. In October 2013, UOL published a special report to 15 years of Diante do Trono, were interviewed Ana Paula Valadão, André Valadão, Mariana Valadão, Nívea Soares, Helena Tannure, Ana Nóbrega, among many others.[135]

Forbes magazine reported the 100 most influential celebrities in Brazil in 2013, Ana Paula Valadão was on this list.[136][137]

Awards and nominations

During its years of existence, the Diante do Trono received 61 nominations in Talento Trophy between the 2002 and 2009.[29][43][51][138][139][140][141][142][113][143][144] Of the 61 indications it received, it won in 24, or 39.3% of them. The most successful year of the set was that of 2004, when they received 8 nominations and won in 7.[33][145]

In the first edition of the Promessas Trophy in 2011 the ministry was nominated in 5 categories and won in two, being the most awarded of the night. Promissas Trophy 2012, received 5 nominations passed through two stages of the awards with five nominations and won two, which represents 40% of them. Knowing that these first two editions of the largest Brazilian Christian music awards Promises Trophy, the ministry is the biggest winner, along with Thalles Roberto with four awards.[70][146]

In 2012 the group was nominated for a Latin Grammy for Best Christian Album of Music in Portuguese, but the group did not win.[5]
