Devarakonda is a town in the Nalgonda district of the Indian state of Telangana. It is a nagar panchayat in Devarakonda mandal of Devarakonda division.[2][3]

History

Devarakonda's history dates back to 13th and 14th centuries. It was ruled by the Recherla Padmanayaka Velama dynasty the last Hindu rulers who ruled entire Telangana and parts of andhra from simhachalam in north and venkatagiri in south along with their brothers of Rachakonda. Velamas of Devarakonda are the last Hindu rulers after who ruled Telugu areas before Qutub shahis. They defeated the Kondaveedu kingdom capitals and bases from Telangana. Descendant small kingdoms of Recherala velamas after downfall of Devarakonda and Rachakonda are Bobbili(Ramakrishna Ranga Rao of Bobbili.cheif minister of united madras presidency), Venkatagiri, Pitapuram, Nuzivid (Produced Senior NTRamarao's first film). Narsaraopeta, Jetprole, Kollapur, Ashwaraopet, Kolanka, Pangal, Srikalahasthi(Panaganti Ramarayaningar cheif minister of united madras presidency) Present day Chennai city name derived from it's old name chennapattanam.It was named after Damerla chennappa nayaka who is a descendant of devarakonda kings of srikalahasthi.

Demographics

According to the 2001 India census, Devarakonda has a population of 37,434. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Devarakonda has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81% and female literacy is 63%. In Devarakonda, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.[4]
