Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President is a 2011 book by Candice Millard covering the life and assassination of president James A. Garfield.[1][2] Published by Doubleday (an imprint of Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, owned by Random House[3]) on 20 September 2011, it later went on to win the Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime in 2012.[4]
