Collaborations

In 2010, DelGaudio and artist Glenn Kaino co-founded A.BANDIT, an experimental performance-art collective. A.BANDIT has staged interventions at Art L.A. Contemporary in Santa Monica, The Ball of Artists, Art Basel Miami, LA><ART, and at The Kitchen in New York.[1] They have co-authored a book under the A.BANDIT name, A Secret Has Two Faces, containing interviews and stories from their careers in performance and magic as well as contributions from Marina Abramović, David Blaine, and John Baldessari.[2]

Together, DelGaudio and Kaino also created The Mistake Room,[3] a platform for situation-specific projects, as well as The [Space] Between, a "conceptual magic shop". [4]

Public works

DelGaudio has staged works at LA><ART, Art L.A. Contemporary, SoHo House Hollywood, Art Basel Miami, and The Kitchen in New York City, as well as site-specific performances for Grand Arts, The Ball of Artists and LACMA.

In 2011, DelGaudio appeared in "#derekshowlive", a magic show performed solely on Twitter.[5]

Nothing To Hide

DelGaudio wrote and co-starred (with Helder Guimaraes) in the show Nothing To Hide, directed by Neil Patrick Harris. The theatrical magic show debuted at The Geffen Playhouse[6][7] in Los Angeles on November 27, 2012. Though the show was originally meant to be a one-month run, it was extended for an additional 18 weeks where it became one of the five highest-grossing productions in the venue’s 20-year history.[8] Nothing To Hide then traveled across the country and opened for an off-Broadway run at The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre at the Pershing Square Signature Center in New York City on October 23, 2013.[9]

In & Of Itself

Following Nothing To Hide, The Geffen Theater committed DelGaudio to their upcoming subscription series, for which DelGaudio constructed In & Of Itself, a show about identity which used storytelling and illusion to reveal truth.[10]

In & Of Itself makes the case for the art of magic with the power of storytelling. Derek DelGaudio isn’t just performing magic tricks but presenting a moving deeply personal and compelling narrative, using magic as a metaphor to reach a deeper truth.” – /Film .[11]

For In & Of Itself, DelGaudio sought inspiration for the shows theme of identity and the use of I_Am_a_Man! from his exploration of the Memphis_sanitation_strike.[12]

In & Of Itself was produced by Glenn Kaino, with original music by Mark Mothersbaugh, and directed by Frank Oz.[13] The show's run was extended five times, making it the most commercially successful production the Geffen Playhouse has had in the Audrey Skirball Kenis since DelGaudio's Nothing To Hide.[14]

In & Of Itself opened Off-Broadway in New York on April 5, 2017, at the Daryl Roth Theatre with Neil Patrick Harris as executive producer.[15] It broke box office records for advanced sales, recouped its capitalization, and has been profitable since 2017.[16] DelGaudio and In & Of Itself have been featured on This American Life and The Late Show[17] and has received widespread praise, including from The New York Times, Time Out, Vogue, and the Village Voice.[18] In a review for The New Yorker, the show was termed “a thoughtful piece of theatre" that "will linger in the mind and leave ample room for wonder.”[19] In & Of Itself closed on August 19, 2018.

Awards and honors
