Deniz Doğan Mehmet (born 19 September 1992) is a professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Scottish Championship club Dundee United.

A former youth team player at Arsenal, Charlton Athletic, Manchester United, and West Ham United, he went on to join Welling United for a brief spell in 2011. Having represented Turkey up to under-19 level, English-born Mehmet then spent four years in Turkey as a reserve goalkeeper at Kayserispor. He joined Scottish club Falkirk in January 2016, where he stayed for 12 months. He returned to England to join Port Vale in March 2017 before joining Dundee United later that year.

Early life

Deniz Mehmet was born in Enfield, London, on 19 September 1992. He is of Turkish Cypriot descent.[2]

Club career

Mehmet was associated with the academies at Arsenal, Charlton Athletic, and Manchester United, before he joined the youth academy at West Ham United in 2008.[3] He left West Ham in summer 2011, and had trials with Ipswich Town in April 2011 and Wycombe Wanderers in July 2011.[4][5] He went on to sign with Welling United of the Conference South.[6] He left Welling to join Turkish Süper Lig side Kayserispor. He left the club in January 2015, having played ten cup games in four seasons.[7]

He had trials with Luton Town and Leyton Orient in summer 2015, and then went on to have a trial with Plymouth Argyle in October 2015, and featured for the club in the Under-21 Premier League Cup.[8][9][10] He joined Scottish Championship side Falkirk in January 2016 after a month long trial.[11] He was unable to dislodge first choice goalkeeper Danny Rogers and left the club by mutual consent in January 2017 after telling manager Peter Houston he wanted to find more game time.[12]

Mehmet signed a short-term contract with EFL League One side Port Vale on 1 March 2017, with the intention of being understudy to loanee goalkeeper Leo Fasan.[13] He made his debut in a crucial 2–1 win against relegation rivals Shrewsbury Town at Vale Park on 17 March.[14] Eight days later he impressed in a 0–0 home draw with Milton Keynes Dons, which was the club's first clean sheet in 14 games.[15] He was released by manager Michael Brown following the club's relegation in May 2017.[16]

He signed a one-year contract with Scottish Championship side Dundee United after impressing on a trial basis in July 2017.[17][18] He was restricted to appearances in cup games in the first part of the 2017–18 season despite having a "clean slate" when Csaba László replaced Ray McKinnon as manager in November; he said the change in management had little effect on him as he spent most of his time at Tannadice Park with goalkeeping coach Stuart Garden.[19] He managed to win his first-team place towards the end of the campaign and kept goal as the "Tangerines" defeated Dunfermline Athletic in the play-off quarter-finals, but had to be taken off for Harry Lewis 57 minutes into the second leg after he injured himself celebrating Scott McDonald's equalising goal; manager Laszlo said that "this is absolutely the funniest thing I've seen. It was really stupid".[20]

International career

Mehmet has been capped by Turkey at under-16, under-17, under-18, and under-19 level. He was selected by Abdullah Ercan as a squad member for the 2009 UEFA European Under-17 Championship in Germany and the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Nigeria.[21][22]
