Denis Malgin (born 18 January 1997) is a Swiss professional ice hockey forward currently playing for the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He formerly played for the GCK Lions and the ZSC Lions. Malgin was selected by the Florida Panthers in the fourth round (102nd overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Internationally Malgin has plays for the Swiss national team.
Playing career
Malgin made his National League A debut playing with ZSC Lions during the 2014–15 NLA season.[1]
On 25 July 2016, Malgin signed an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League (NHL).[2] A strong showing at training camp and injuries to other players on the Panthers helped Malgin earn a spot on the opening-day roster.[3]
Malgin made his NHL debut in the Panthers' season opening game on October 13, 2016 against the New Jersey Devils.[4] His first career point, an assist, came in his second game against the Detroit Red Wings on October 15.[5] His first goal game on November 2, 2016 against Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins.[6] He earned notice during a nine game stretch early in the season when he recorded seven points over nine games. However that was followed by 21 games without a point, leading to him being sent to the Panthers' American Hockey League affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds for development.[7] After 15 games with the Thunderbirds, where he scored 12 points, Malgin was brought back to the Panthers.[8]
International play
Malgin competed with Team Switzerland at the 2015 IIHF World U18 Championships where he was named to the 2015 IIHF World U18 Championship All-Star Team.
Personal life
Malgin's father, Albert, is originally from Russia. He played for teams in the Soviet Union before moving to Switzerland to continue his career.[9] Malgin's brother, Dmitri also plays hockey in the Swiss League, the second tier league in Switzerland. It was Albert who introduced Malgin to hockey; at the age of 3 Malgin began skating with his father's team.[10]
Growing up Malgin returned to Perm, Russia every summer, where his father is from. He grew up speaking Russian, though learned Swiss German at school.[9]
