Demián Bichir Nájera (Spanish pronunciation: [deˈmjan biˈtʃiɾ ˈnaxeɾa]; born August 1, 1963) is a Mexican-American actor and one of the members of the Bichir family.[2][3] After starring in telenovelas, he appeared in other Hollywood films.[4]
Early life
Bichir was born in Torreón, the son of actors Alejandro Bichir and Maricruz Nájera.[5] His brothers, Odiseo and Bruno, are also actors.[6] He worked at the National Theater Company, performed Shakespeare and Dostoyevsky, and won several awards from the Mexican Association of Theater Critics.[7] He attended the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, and worked at the Rosa Mexicano Restaurant.[8]
Career
Bichir played Fidel Castro in Che[9] and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor in A Better Life.[10][11] He starred in the FX series The Bridge[12][13][14] and Quentin Tarantino's western film The Hateful Eight.[15] His directorial debut film, Un Cuento de Circo & A Love Song, premiered at the Morelia International Film Festival.[16][17] Bichir starred in Alien: Covenant, the second prequel film of the Alien series.[18] He starred in The Conjuring prequel film The Nun[19] and joined the cast for the film Chaos Walking, based on Patrick Ness' trilogy novels.[20] In March 2018, Bichir starred in the ABC remake Grand Hotel, based on the Spanish television series.[21]
Personal life
Bichir has been in a relationship with Canadian actress Stefanie Sherk since 2011.[22] He married Lisset from 2001 to 2003. His daughter, Gala (born 2011), is from a brief relationship with a Spanish woman.[23][24][25] He is an American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Ambassador for Immigration Rights.[26][27][28]
