DeepL Translator is a translation service launched in August 2017 by DeepL GmbH, a start up company backed up by Linguee. The service currently supports translations between seven major European languages.[1] It was shown that DeepL translations sounded a bit more natural to humans compared to other major translation services such as Google Translate, Microsoft Translator and Facebook,[2][3][4] using BLEU to assess the translation quality against the competitors.[5] Especially the translation results are more precise and nuanced at a speed equal to that of its competitors.[6]
Technology
The service uses convolutional neural networks[7] built on the Linguee database with a proprietary approach which is not made public or published but reported that it uses some sort of attention mechanism.[8] It is reported that company uses a 5 Petaflops machine.[9]
Later, DeepL introduced a paid ″Pro″ version of the service, which removes some limits of the website translator and offers an API, which developers can use to integrate the translation service into their products.[10]
Privacy
Both DeepL Pro and DeepL Translator (free) prohibit translating "texts containing personal data of any kind".[11] Unlike the freemium version, the Pro version advertises that it does not store the texts being translated.[10]
The DeepL website uses Google Analytics as well as their own HTTP cookies to re-identify users and associate them with pseudonymous user profiles.[11]
