Too Kyo Games, LLC (Japanese: トゥーキョーゲームス, Hepburn: Tū Kyō Gēmusu) is a Japanese independent game developer founded by ex-employees of Spike Chunsoft, including Danganronpa series writer Kazukata Kodaka, composer Masafumi Takada and illustrator Rui Komatsuzaki, and Zero Escape series writer and director Kotaro Uchikoshi. The company is currently working on three video game projects – one of which is a co-production with Spike Chunsoft, and one with Grounding – and one anime project in collaboration with Studio Pierrot.

History

Kazutaka Kodaka, the writer of Spike Chunsoft's Danganronpa franchise, started thinking about how he wanted to create his own development company where he could do new things, following the completion of the anime television series Danganronpa 3 (2016) and the video game Danganronpa V3 (2017). He discussed it with the Danganronpa character designer and composer, Rui Komatsuzaki and Masafumi Takada, who also were interested in the idea; Takada founded the company in 2017, as he had already been involved in the launch of other companies. Kodaka also invited other people to join the company, including Kotaro Uchikoshi, the director and scenario writer for Spike Chunsoft's Zero Escape series; the Danganronpa illustrator Shimadoriru; Takumi Nakazawa, the director and co-writer of KID's Infinity series; and the Danganronpa novelist Yoichirou Koizumi. Kodaka, Takada, Komatsuzaki and Uchikoshi are the core members of the company, and Kodaka is its representative. The company's name is a wordplay on Tokyo – where they are based – and the Japanese word kyō (, "crazy"), thus meaning "Too Crazy Games".[1]

The company was first announced to the public in September 9, 2018 by the magazine Famitsu, as a new game development company by "unknown", famous game creators.[2] Two days later, the staff members of Too Kyo Games were revealed to the public, and they announced four new projects: One game involving all seven staff members, co-written by Kodaka and Uchikoshi; an anime in collaboration with Studio Pierrot, written by Kodaka and with character design bu Komatsuzaki; the action-adventure game Death March Club, published by Izanagi Games and co-developed by Grounding with Kodaka as creative director, Uchikoshi as writer and director and Nakazawa as the director as well;[3][4] and a game developed in a collaboration with Spike Chunsoft, with character designs by Komatsuzaki, background artwork by Shimadoriru, and music by Takada.[5][6] The fourth project was started by Kodaka before he left Spike Chunsoft.[1] According to Kodaka, their first four projects are expected to be released about two to three years after their announcement.[7]

The goal of the company, according to Kodaka, is to create new intellectual properties, and for the staff to also create their own indie game projects;[8] he also mentioned that he would still like to go back to the Danganronpa franchise at some point in the future.[1]
