Dean & DeLuca is an American chain of upscale grocery stores. The first one was established in New York City's SoHo district by Joel Dean, Giorgio DeLuca and Jack Ceglic[1] in September 1977 joined in September 1979 by Eugenio Pozzolini who became a partner in 1981. It is headquartered in Wichita, Kansas. As of 2014, Dean & Deluca is owned by Pace Development, a Thai luxury development company.[2]

Locations

Giorgio DeLuca, a school teacher turned cheese merchant, and Joel Dean, a publishing business manager, opened the first Dean & DeLuca in September 1977 in SoHo, an area in lower Manhattan, at the corner of Prince and Greene streets. In October 1988, a new flagship market was opened at the corner of Broadway and Prince Streets.[3] Smaller retail outlets followed in Manhattan’s Rockefeller Plaza and in the Paramount Hotel. Espresso Bars are also located around New York and in Washington, D.C.

Dean & DeLuca currently operates a number of locations, both full markets as well as cafe setups, in New York City, Napa Valley, California, Washington D.C., Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok, Dubai, Kuwait, Bahrain, Makati in Metro Manila, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Macao. Major retail locations often offer catering services within their local area.

Dean & DeLuca uses a license structure in foreign markets. Dean & DeLuca opened its first international location in Tokyo in 2003 with Itochu Dean & Deluca Japan (11 locations, in 2 cities, including MahaNakhon in Bangkok in July 2011 and Orchard Central in Singapore in June 2012). In 2007, they signed their second license with M.H. Alshaya Co. Middle East (5 locations, including a flagship location in Kuwait City in 2009, Villagio Mall in Doha, Qatar in May 2010, 2 locations in Dubai, And the newest location at the Avenues Mall in Bahrain in 2017). In 2010, Dean & DeLuca signed additional license agreements with Pace Development Thailand (3 locations), Shinsegae Korea (2 locations), and Mekassa Turkey.

  • Felicity Porter, the title character in the TV series Felicity (1998-2002), worked at Dean & DeLuca while attending college in New York. The shop appeared in many episodes.
  • In the movie Hannibal, Lecter is seen to eat from a Dean & DeLuca travel pack, containing foie gras, Beluga caviar, figs, and fried brains.[4]
  • The character of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho refers to Italian seasoning salt, picked up from Dean & DeLuca.[5]
  • In the movie The Devil Wears Prada, Andy’s boyfriend refers to purchasing groceries from Dean & DeLuca after Andy told him that she quit her job.
